Giles new projects ! (yup another !)XTturbo / VORTEX & MV / BRUMBY's

Post by 1111giles » Fri Feb 18, 2011 5:15 am

Hi folks,
I have been busy this last few weeks ! Not only have I bought 2 more Brumby's but I have managed to accuire a very straight and rust free XTturbo or as you will know them Vortex (great name that !) I have also dropped on a breaker / doner XT as well ! This is in fact is remarkable as it is thought that there are as few as 7 roadworthy XT's here in the UK !
The project XT has been dry stored for about 6 or 7 years so the condition is excellent body wise.
I plan to get it road worthy and give it some road time before having it resprayed to its former glory in Summer.
The doner car has most of the A/C system there to transplant and will also yeild some other stuff I have spotted too.

The Brumby's - one is to be sold on as a project / spares vehicle it looks rough but is actually very solid. The other will be a project for later in the year and will be a deffo slow burner. I am not sure exactly what to do with it or to what standard it will be restored to. Its very good underneath but needs fenders, a door and the front skirt (all of which I have got :-D) It will probbo be re painted too as its Beige under its current mossy green hue !

Here are some images of all of em'

G'day Giles,
sure gotta love the luck of the Irish eheheh.
They are a great looking bunch you have managed to find plus by the look of them they are fairly good body wise with not a grat deal of rust visible.
Take your time and all you plans will come together half your luck.

Cheers Hylton ! Yes the 2 project vehicles are really in very good condition:D
This age of car (XT 23 yo MV 18 yo) - especially Japanese cars - are virtually non existant now in the UK so I think I was very lucky to get these. The beige truck has come with the added bonus of a great CD radio unit in it too and a pair of Impreza seats to fit in it:D

Oh and I am not Irish ! hehehe (although its a great place to visit I ve been 5 or 6 times to the Republic - great 'craic' to be had there:mrgreen:)

Rarer than a hens tooth infact - talking with my friendly Subaru main dealer last week (they were one of the first UK Subaru dealers here) The parts manager said he didnt know when last he was asked for XT parts, a bit of computor diggin later it was 8 years ago !

I recon the last one I saw was at least 8-10 years ago. So the figure of 7 in the UK is most probably correct.
Rust will have been the killer here to a very low volume seller in the first place.

FYI guys - Subaru in the UK were and still are one of the UK's small players (unlike OZ where they are no 2/3 of the importers ?).
They tend to have smaller and way fewer dealerships and in the early days they tended to be stuck out in rural area's to grab the remote/farmer/country user market.

To give you an idea. RN Golden (my local dealer) only has one other competitor dealer in the whole of West Yorkshire ! So they could be said to serve a population of 2.2 million people between the pair of them ! Result is they just dont get the coverage to the areas away from the dealership.

Ford / Nissan (who build here) may have 10 dealerships each in the county and not stuck out in the countryside but right in the middle of the retail areas !

Think I already have ! I have a small container in a unit which at one end is stuffed to the gunnells with Brumby stuff ! Now I need to make more room for the stuff that will come off the Vortex:D

Get a few more XT / Vortex and you won't need to open a parts place - no one in UK will own one to need parts!!

May be good business opportunity alongside soap "Giles' Garage" using these beasts as testament they will last. And invite the prospective purchasers to go order something for a 25 year old subie to find not only will the car last 25 years and more - the parts support is there ! I could send you some Aussie made socks (to fold inside themselves increasing bulk) for one Clarksons mouth to help you along the way

Saturday Shopping - Subaru Style

Post by 1111giles » Mon Mar 28, 2011 6:47 am

Ok - Question when Saturday comes around what thing do (most) men dread the most ?
Answer - getting dragged off to the shops to go shopping with the Mrs :(

Ok - so what if you could spend the whole day off shopping for those vital parts for your Super Subaru ? well that's EXACTLY what I managed to pull off yesterday !!

7 AM Prompt my Dad and I set off from Halifax in our Merc Sprinter with a full (£96) tank of diesel and headed south west, the first destination being a breakers yard in deepest Shropshire countryside. Here I collected an item I had been after for a long while - a spare (just in case) fuel tank which is in excellent condition.

Then we trucked off in the direction of Gloucester to meet up with Turbotombrat and his dad. Here I collected my recently purchased PAS kit along with the A/C pump from the XTturbo I bought from him which had stayed with Tom on the engine he had kept. Whilst there I also bought from him some really good stainless trims for my MV / Brumby. Tom and his Dad are real characters and we all had a real good chat.

All loaded up, We then headed even further south to Bath / South of Bristol area - here to meet up with Bratman.

Bratman aka Tim insisted that he take me for a QUICK spin in the 350bhp BRAT he has built.

To say that Tims truck is fast is an understatement - its goes like a cat with boiling water poured on its back ! For the sake of Tim's driving licence I can confirm that I did not at all see the speedo in the dash - this was because my eyes were peeling back due to the ferocious acceleration ! My face must nearly have looked like the famous Clarkson shot when he drove the atom ! So perhaps better not to know our velocity achieved.
Tim is a true character and suits his truck down to a tee - its a credit to him and I just wish I could have driven it ! (but riding shotgun in it will do - for now Tim !)
I was collecting from him a truck top and load liner I recently bought from him for my MV2 project - Tim also gave me some other MVBrumby goodies too - Tim your a top man and we should correction WILL have some beers together sometime soon !
All loaded up and a cup of tea later - we set off for home and landed back in Halifax at 7.30pm and some 550 miles later. Fuel tank reading empty.

Oh and just to make the day double complete - Mrs Scoobydo had my tea ready and waiting for me and then even agreed to run me to the pub where I met up with 3 of my mates for beers and a curry !

I just luurrvve Subaru Shopping on Saturdays
