Liberty Steering Rack into L series, but with Liberty hubs

Post by Gannon » Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:27 pm

Ive been searching if it has been done before.... but cannot find anyone who has, surely.

I have an RX with the crossbred brake kit and thus front hubs. It originally had manual steering.

So with the hubs on, i either needed MY tie rod ends with the manual rack, or i thought id kill 2 birds with one stone and fit a power liberty rack.

I have 2 issues....

1.) The steering shaft is at the wrong angle, and with a shortened linkage, it still doesnt turn smoothly. I plan to rotate the rack slightly backwards using some tapered shims in the mounts to bring the shaft back into line.

2.) The Liberty rack is longer than the L series one, even though i have adjusted the tie rod ends all the way in. Is there an easy fix to this that doesnt involve turning down more of the rack rod threads to allow me to twist the tie rod ends on further?

I would have thought somebody has come across this before

Dunno but have you looked into changing the rods at the end of the rack for something shorter? This could help you out with what you're after.

Best of luck, I'll be keen to see the results too.

Cheers

Possibly early toyota camry may help out for tie rod ends in this application

I followed up a link nncoolg gave me, and i may have overlooked the answer.

Libertys have a 150mm long tie rod end with a M14x1.5 thread. The ball joint has a M12x1.25 thread

L series have a 133mm long tie rod end with a M14x1.5 thread. The ball joint has a M10x1.25 thread

I cant find info on MY ends, but im gonna assume that they are 133mm long and but have the larger M12x1.25 ball joint.

The instructions with the Crossbred kit stated the MY ends must be used, but i thought they would only fit on the L series rack. They appear to have the same thread as the Liberty rack, so i was worrying for nothing.

Anybody have any MY tie rod ends they wannna get rid of?

Im gonna have to work out a way to angle the steering shaft back, so the uni joints will turn smoothly.
I wish i could just shorten the steering shaft

That 5 stud info was very helpful/insightful Suparoo. Now I personally feel confident to tackle that upgrade when the time comes:)

Priced some tie rod ends for a Brumby this arvo, a mere $22 each

Just have to angle the shaft back and all will be sweet

Yeah tie rod ends and ball joints are cheap - no excuse to keep the front end in good condition ;)

Also great you've been able to keep the parts stock subaru :D
