Gday all


Long time no post, after all my initial cooling & power steering issues i have just been driving my subie. However now it's time for some serious thinking.

It's the classic keep or sell question and i'm looking for some advice.

I've spent very little on the car since the initial outlay and inevitable work on a "new" second hand car. I'm planning on going round Aus in 18 months and was initially going to dump the subie and wait a while to buy a newer and more bad ass 4wd. Now i need to reconsider and see how much it will cost to keep the subie and possibly take her for the first part of the trip around

As it stand at the moment a few things need attending.
Clutch is very nearly dead
Synchro on 3rd gear is gone and possibly nearly there on a few other gears
Considerable oil leak from R side rocker cover

I will NOT be doing any of the work myself due to time constraints and my fear of engine work but am able to do little bits and pieces here and there if required. I'd be more inclined to fit a suspension lift kit or brake conversion than fit a gearbox.

I'm content with the current performance of the engine in its abused and ancient state, do NOT want to do an EJ conversion.

With this in mind, and with the forums collective knowledge of these cars, would it be feasible to get a reconditioned engine and gearbox? Are these still available or would i be paying a mechanic to rebuild both (?much more expensive than recoed)

If the engine and gearbox issue is resolved, with the forums collective knowledge of this cars potential, would it be a wise idea to start prepping for the trip around AUS? Looking at predominantly outback touring over lengths of time (but slow and steady) so according to those who have gone before and research would at least need an inch or 2 of lift and some more serious wheels/tyres. Has anyone been around in their subie and if so what did you take/would you recommend?

Lastly the magical question, are there any mechanics/consumers out there who have done this and have a rough idea of cost?

I would suggest the EJ upgrade and keep the car.
