engine rattle on take off

Post by trx850 » Mon Apr 24, 2006 12:23 am

hi guys got the website of a guy i boyght my lift kit from a few months ago , cool site lots of info. i have an L-Series wagon and a couple of weeks ago i finally pulled my finger and fitted the 2 inch kit i bought. i have 185r14 tyres on it and i am wondering if they are too big for the car. its a good motor fitted with a webber carb but in first gear when i pull away i get this rattling sound from the engine like you would get if you tried to pull away in too high a gear. is this a normal thing with this car with bigger tyres/ i realize that they are not a powerful motor but i thought it would be ok even with the larger tyures as the guy i bought the kit from had the same size rubber with no major problems. would advancing or retarding the timing make a difference? i had a mate with a timing light play around with iit a while back and im wondering if checking this may help. i fitted the webber to the car and he was playing with the timing light when the original carb was in place.

Sounds like your timing is too far advanced causing ping.

Try using 98 octane fuel if you not at the moment otherwise knock your timing back a few degrees and see how you go.

Could also be the heat box thats on the exhaust (where the two header pipes join into one) rattling if its loose.

If you can accelerate to 100km in 4th without it pinging or pulling the timing is about right.
Try marking the current postion then moving it one way. If it improves keep going that way. If it gets worse go back the other way.
If you can't get it right, at least you have a mark to return to until you can get a timing light on it.
