Boxer Diesel Injection pump - issue

Post by 1111giles » Tue Nov 30, 2010 9:26 am

Hi Folks,

My 2008 MY Outback Diesel is a truly fine car, one which suits me down to the ground. It just had it's 48,000 mile (90,000kms ??) service today.

I have had however, a strange issue where the engine would simply cut out without warning when coming upto rest (at traffic lights etc). I had the car back at my friendly local Subaru main dealer who could not get the car to 'perform' this occurance when hooked upto their diagnostic computor (to fault code the problem) nothing was showing up on the history fault file either.
The engine has always sounded crackly on start up - what I would call diesel knock - which I have always attributed to over fuelling.

The garage has told me today that they are 'applying' to SUK for a new diesel injection pump on warranty as they now think that this is at the route of my problems.
The car has excellent performance and is silky smooth - so no complaints there - but it has always been smokey on hard acceleration, and has from time to time on start up belched out white smoke on initial start up, if left on a side ways tilt for a few hours. - It was thought that it was a fuel return valve that was sticking and allowing neat fuel to pass into the cylinders, changing this didn't fix the problem.

Anyone out there had similar experiences with their diesel motors ?
Despite above - its a great engine and I will have another:D

Giles.

Hi Giles,
just a thought but have you given one of the diesel pump specialist
a call and talked to a tech about the apparent problem and situations when it happens.
Try this mob to start with they are in your area

HeHehe - I know those boys and before they took that unit, we actually had a look at it for ourselves as our potential new base :-D

Because the car is under warranty I will have to let the Main dealer search this one out, they get miffy if you 'step in' and could well be told by SUK not to fix due to 'non subaru' engineers touching it.

Of course a chat is fine with the guys in town - let them have a listen, but the dealership had the car on their laptop and fault codes were reported from elements of the Inj pump.

If warranty approved they say they can swap it in one day - so that's not too bad !

I have always associated white smoke from a Diesel to be running lean or you have mixed petrol with your fuel or misfiring. I get into enough trouble playing with LPG, turbos and old subies so not expanding into Diesel toys just yet.

Giles, I thought I saw a post on here somewhere recently about issues with these diesel boxers and their fuel pump issues...I'll have a look for you or you may be able to find it yourself in here somewhere. Wasn't long ago. Trevor...

Thank's Trevor for pointing this out, could be worth asking them to check this too - because the motor has 'smoked' a little (its diesel related) as the motor does not use oil, there possibly could be a build up in the filter - so I'll ask my Subaru main dealer friends to check this out for me.:D
