Screwy gearshifts

Post by Busdriver » Sat Nov 27, 2010 2:49 pm

Not Subie related, but because my other halves car is still under waranty, she needs to get it serviced somewhere that will stamp the book in case anything goes wrong. After the last service she complained to me that it wont go back to first sometimes. I told her to take it back, but she put up with it for a couple of months until one day it wont go in to first or third at all. She says I will have to look at it so I drive it and its true, although this is the first time she has asked me to look at it and the first time it has done it while I am driving. So I ripped out the battery and the airbox so I can see the selectors (06 Hyundai Getz) and found a screwdriver jammed in the selector mechanism. Badly bent and twisted, I removed it and Bingo, shifts like new again. I wonder if its worth taking back to them if the clutch starts slipping soon, as there have been a few second gear takeoffs lately? it must be theirs as its not mine and they are the only other ones to have worked on the car.

sounds like a very dodgy bunch of mechanics at the least

you had to remove the battery and the airbox just to get at the screwdriver, which means either when it dropped the mechanic said "ah well forget it" or it was placed their to cause the problem in the first place. Either way I would definitely be looking for someone else to work on the car

Yeah, I'm hoping it was a case of "well I cant see it and it didnt hit the ground, so I'll pretend it didnt happen" and it'll soon be out of its 5 year waranty so it'll be my problem then and I'll have noone else to blame but myself if it happens again.
