heh, the simple fact that it's got "Legacy" written on the car means it's a private import so comparing it to locally sold cars is going to add to confusion.

Yeah looks like your best bet will be to find a replacement EJ18 short motor, then it will be a fairly simple weekend job to swap in and use all the existing electronics to run it.

If you want to change to a multipoint injected EJ system like all the Aussie Subaru's have then it's a fairly involved conversion from a wiring perspective. Not too complex for someone in the know with that side of things, but complex for your average home mechanic.

Na I originally thought the mess in under the dash was something to do with an immobiliser ;)

Think I may just stick with an EJ18 save stuffing around

The same wreckers just happened to have an EJ18 out of a 94 Impreza, done 120,000. Same deal $1100

From what people are saying that seems a bit steep, so I might have a look in a few other places

Half the price ;)

when you add another 1300 dollars to the 1100 dollar price tag you can buy a recon short block.

$550 is a way better price but if you hunt around a bit more you could do even better

Most people throw them away, a mate of mine sold one with 70k on it for $90 with wiring & computer, you really need to to join something like RSLC or some Impreza forums, possibly REXNET and put a wanted add up, heaps of people have done conversions and have the old motors laying in their sheds, you may also be able to use a 2L block, ask Al on RSLC, he knows pretty much everything about what will fit what & may have a spare motor laying around or be able to get you one cheap.
Here is Al's web site, call or email explaining the problem & hopefully he'll be able to help you out.

I have one from an Impreza (about a 97 model) not sure how many kms? was going to fit it into Gleno's L until we stripped the Liberty. You can have it for $300 but I'm not sure what freight from WA will be to you? maybe you can make some calls?

Cheers,
Paul

Many thanks to all of you for your help

So did you end up with a replacement EJ18 or EJ22?

Cheers

I got hold of an EJ18 from an Impreza and swapped the camshaft, distributor and front timing pulley

Saved stuffing about to much, mum needed her car back
