Cooked EJ22 - Options?

Gday

Just got home after picking mum and her Subaru up (1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon) . The radiator developed a leak and she seems to have cooked it pretty badly.

One of the spark plugs had popped out of its spot so I'm guessing at least a cracked head? It was also making a bit of a knocking noise

What are the best options?

I imagine a rebuild wouldn't be worthwhile seeing as the heads are probably knackered after getting so hot. It has just done 300,000 and was starting to use oil anyway

I had a quick squiz on the net, will an EJ20 out of a '98 Forester bolt straight in?

Other wise I'll try and get a second hand or remanufactured EJ22 long engine?

an EJ20 will bolt straight in but you will need the computer and loom to match it I would look for either the second hand engine (cheaper but could come with problems) or find a rebuilt long block (expensive but you know it will last a long time)

Jock.. you mentioned it's a Legacy wagon? is it a AUS delivered car or a Jap delivered? Can you tell me the engine that is in it now (EJ20 or EJ22)? and is it SOHC or DOHC?

Sorry I don't know that one. We bought it second hand a while back

Pretty sure it's an EJ22 (I bought a timing belt kit to suit and everything fitted), couldn't tell you if it's SOHC or not because the cars in at work at the moment. I'll let you know tomorrow

Rang around the wreckers today, I can get one with 180,000km on it and 6 months warranty from a wreck. It has been running. They want $1150 without any bolt ons ie. powersteering pump, A/C pump or alternator

I know a bit about Landies but not much about Subarus. Is that a fair price?

Ok.. the EJ22 timing kit is a good start to knowing what you've got but it's best to look at the casting marks on the block. Just have a butchers hook at the block just under the alternator.. it should say EJ20 or EJ22. Also if you look on the manufactures plate (LHF strut tower) you should see an "Engine Code"

Both engines will be cheaper to buy secondhand but remember to buy a known one.. like hear running if possible. Rebuilding is not cheap and depending on what damage was done when it overheated it may end up costing more than the cars value. But this leads me to my next bit.. if you plan on keeping the car for a long time then just make some calls to your local engine builders and grab some rebuilt engine quotes

Well just to throw a spanner in the works

I just checked the engine, stamped under the alternator is EJ18

And on the compliance plate is EJ22ENA1BD

So.... hopefully an EJ22 will slot back in as the third engine in this car

well that could mean it has the loom and computer for an EJ18 or it could have the EJ22 loom and computer still

suggestions people ?????

I'll try and haggle with these wreckers and get them to throw in the computer

Will alternator AC pump and all the ancillaries still swap over?

Jock find out what computer you have first otherwise you might be paying for something you have already. Im pretty sure thats why Paul is asking for the photos to determine what setup is under the bonnet, eg red or grey injectors are for ej22 (99% of the time) throttle body and sensors and wiring for the engine.

ac pump, power steering pump and alternator should bolt directly onto the new motor no need to unbolt the pipework on the aircon or the power steering the intake manifold will bolt on complete as well.

Yeah Jock.. like Jules has said, you may already have the ECU and stuff but I need pics to determine what wiring you have on the EJ18.. if it's EJ22 wiring then you could be in luck. I'm hoping someone just removed the EJ22 and swapped everything over on to the EJ18 *crossing fingers*

The colour of the injectors wont affect the outcome

And yes.. all the accessories will swap over

Legacy's probably came out in Japan with a 1.8 povo pack like the 1.3 Impreza's, might be best to pick up a 1.8 Impreza motor and just bolt the ancillaries onto it.

Wish I'd seen that earlier. But the only trouble is I can't pick it up on a weekend which would mean taking a day off work to pick it up, hiring a trailer for the day and driving 400km return to pick it up.

Probably cost the same in the end

Had a chat to the fella with the engine today, he may be prepared to throw the ECU in as well hopefully

Can you grab the entire VIN number and whatever is written on the ECU?

If it is a genuine import Legacy, the VIN will start with BF or BJ

If it is an Aus delivered vehicle with Legacy badges, the VIN will start with either JF1 or JF2

Ok.. from all the signs Jock, the car is a Aussie Liberty that originally came with a EJ22 but for some reason or another.. a previous owner have fitted an EJ18

Must have been easier to find

I'd still like to see the pics and also one of the ECU (so we can check numbers) then I think we'll be able to give you better advise.
