anoying noise

Post by dibs » Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:00 am

so the story goes we bought a 2003 forrie lifted front n rear bars strut lift and a subaxtreme low range conversion (all work to this car has been done by subaxtreme) plus other mods

shit loads happy with car

BUT
it has an anoying noise just on float . its a bit like steel to steel sotra like a wheel bearing kinda like a diff . in any gear hi or low notacibly at about 30 to 130 kph . but it dosnt do it free reving it only when driving air on or off dont mater. so yesterday we pulled of the aftermarket bash plate. nope not it was then put up on the hoist and free revd there were some loose exhaust covers they were tightened up but the noise is still there . theres no viberations eather. its more a were than a wine (mechinical kind i will leave wife out of this for now) haha

now my thoughts go to the low range gear set done by subaxtreme .does anyone know someone that has this mod done .if so does theres have a new noise . my thinknig is straight cut gears noisy when on the float. i rang subaxtreme to find its been sold and the new guy dosnt do this mod and i cant find the old owner to ask him. mabe the l series conversion does the same if so i will just have to turn up the volume on the radio .

its a good indercation im doing good fuel econ as its there when the motor isnt working .

were going to the xmas camp so i can let the guys hear it then.

any thoughts

Dibs,
check the exhaust, heat shields, tail shaft area first.
Look for rubbing on the tail shaft

Sounds exactly like tailshaft uni joints to me. Specifically the ones in the yolk at the end that plugs into the gearbox.
Take it out and wobble the yolk around, feel if it moves freely or feels crusty. Also check for any free play in the joints, there shouldn't be any.

daz did them and ditto to andrew when it was up on the hoist everything was checked and by a qualified subaru mech. its got him stumped bigest problem it dosnt do it free reving it even coasting in nuteral in main box and reving it or in gear and nuteral in the hi lo box. taking more notice today when i go through a dip or over a rise it comes and goes but that could just be me on the go pedal.to me it sounds like metal on metal but hevy sound if ya get my drift not tiney sound. theres no vibs in the gear stick.
??????????????????????
