Dumb Forester Question

Post by Corax » Thu Oct 07, 2010 12:13 am

Hey Suba-Dudes,

Ok, this is probably a reallly dumb question but I thought it better to ask and get it right than assume and get it wrong (and break something). Want to pull the wiper arms off my 99 forester and give them a new coat of paint as the rust is getting into them. Now I took the rubber caps off to get at the nuts that hold the wipers on and removed the nuts with no problem. Now I am assuming that you have to lever the arms off the threaded shaft (that the nuts were on) with a screwdriver or something alone those lines? Gave it a bit of a go but was hesitent to really put some muscle into it in case I broke something and a cheap 5 minute job became a 2 hour expensive one..Thanks for any advice/input.

Cheers,
Corax.

They do get jammed on, fold the wiper into the upright position and give it a persuasive wriggle and it should come free. It doesnt hurt to give it a bit of a leverage under the base on the opposite side of the wiper arm so it slides up squarely.
Cheers

Pretty much what Mr TH said.. just undo the nut :) just for your info if you've never pull wiper arms off before Dave.. is they are on a tapered fine splined shaft.. so they just need a gentle persuasion.. I find just pulling them just past the pivot point (like you would be changing the rubbers) just slightly over their resting point does the trick nicely :)

Hope you can understand what I mean.. bit hard to explain without visual

Cheers guys, have followed your advice and managed to get the front 2 off without much difficulty knowing that I wasn't going to break something. The rear one however put up a fight. Ended up having to gently persuade it to come off using a hammer and a screwdriver. Got it though.

like a steering wheel, i like to leave the nut on a couple of turns. just so you dont end up with a wheel or wiper arm as facial jewellery
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

If it works, pull it apart to see why.
