L power steer leak ...wha???

Post by steptoe » Mon Aug 16, 2010 3:30 pm

The L has been sitting five weeks and it started to dribble PS fluid out the steering shaft. Noticed it in my engine swap tasks. It has sat another week and bloody emtied out - this is without engine even running at all,

Has anyone done a PS rack overhaul?

I think, maybe due to scoolant leaking somewhere dribbling out the loose and leaking turbo gasket the horrid ethylene glycol has eaten something or is it just the 88 stering rack giving up (owner is not far behind)

I will need to remove engine to undo the lines from rack to pump. I need to at least get engine running first to warm up , to cool and retension head bolts before I tackle steering issues.

Anyone got a tidy non PS rack for an L Series for sale??

Now that engine is in place making it impossible to get at fluid lines I think I now figure simply shifting the power steer pump and lines out of the way when I got engine out may have undone the lines at the rack? Just cannot understand how just gravity can bleed the fluid out as it has. I recall inspecting things closely and looked like it was coming up past a seal on the shaft. Concerned that fuid will pump spray out on the exhaust or turbo. jonno gonna be cranky for a while whichever way.

I swapped for a PS rack when i did my EJ conversion, so i will find out for you if i still have my non-PS rack lying around in the garage. There was nothing wrong with it at all and you can have it for the price of postage if it is still there.

Not sure why you need to remove the engine to get the the lines on the rack? Aren't they all accesible from under the car.

Here's fingers crossed, Rhys, that is what I like to hear. Size wise it may be over aussie post variable maximum. Absolute max length is 120cm (dress making) or 1200mm (anythng else) but some post offices size it down to 1100mm. Busfreight through greyhound works.

The power steer lines flange nuts were inaccessible before - turbo and its shields get in the way but as shields not yet fitted I can see the nuts so may be able to reach them with a stubby. Closer inspection stll says the red stuff with anti leak stuff is coming out of that seal.

I kick self again as I had the opportunity to buy two L Sedan FWD's for $100 not so long ago KICK KICK

Actually your successful project gives me an idea - if and when EA82T's really let me down I can shelve the sedan for retiremnet :) project EJ25 NA LPG AWD and just drive me Brumby around. I find myself tinkering with old corroded stuff, broken wire looms (soon to be solved with another US economy fix export :) )

Rack with inner tie rods removed will be well under 1.2m. I may have binned it, i won't be able to see untill i go to Melbourne on Firday. Hopefully you have the problem sorted by then.

EJ25D feels like a turbo in an l series. It also has high compression so i think it would do well with straight LPG. It would certainly be an interesting project.

Hoping you haven't binned it, can wait until you know either way thanks. Got a few more pressing issues now. Jonno
