EJ20G engine management

Post by H-top » Sat Aug 07, 2010 3:02 pm

I'm building an EJ20G and have
no computer or loom.
I wish to use factory gear but
not sure which computer or loom
I should be using? It's a 1992 engine.

Which looms and other computers will suit
the engine sensors and injectors?

Cheers

You should be able to run it with an RS Liberty or Legacy GT loom and ECU of the same era.

Is there a year that the electronics
change over? For the RS?

Ive read on RSLC about changing from a 16 bit to a 32 bit ECU in the RS's, but i dont think the wiring changed.

hey H-Top,
check this out for your timing belt kit, the company is located a couple hundred miles from where I live. This kit is what you need for your ej20G. Gates high performance racing belt and all the goodies. They have a kit with tensioner also but my '93 uses a different tensioner. If they wont export for you I will, just let me know.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine

will help identify year and your models used in to determine proper donor vehicle. When calling subaru dealers in the us and in canada i might as well have been looking for parts for a 350 chevy, they dont have anything on them.

It's not going to be complex....if it's a 92 engine then it's from an RS or Legacy GT of some sort. Pretty sure and loom from any model of RS or GT Legacy will run the engine. And you can plug any RS or GT Legacy ECU in, 16bit or 32bit.
The only difference I can think of between looms is some of them are "3plug" type and some are "2plug". This is the number of large plugs that go from the engine loom (the loom that connects to the engine sensors and runs under the inlet manifold) and the car loom (the bit that runs back to the ECU inside the car). You just need to make sure that whatever ECU loom you get matches the engine loom on your engine (2plug or 3plug) and if it doesn't you can just swap the engine loom for the correct one - it will still plug into all the engine sensors.

gen 1 series 2 should do fine, and you have the added advantage of doing a conversion with an engine that is au domestic so to speak. Not having purchased a half cut will make your job a bit more difficult, but you have others that have performed this conversion to rely on,and thats a great wealth of information.
