Urgent driveshaft help needed!!!

Post by rerty » Tue Aug 03, 2010 12:35 pm

Hi,
I'm running an L series wagon with a liberty rs turbo engine, awd liberty rs turbo gearbox and the rear lsd diff out of the rs turbo liberty as well. I am using the crossbred performance brake kit to fit wrx gc8 uprights and springs, wrx gc8 dual piston front calipers and disc's and series 1 liberty knuckles, and gc8 wrx 16
x 7 " rims.
The splines out of the gearbox stubs i count are 25, they go onto the liberty inner cv joint, then out of that the axle spline count is 30, the other end of the axle that goes into the outer cv is 25 count, then the spline through the hub is 25. This driveshaft is supposed to be a series 1 liberty shaft. It's too long!
I've been told to use front wheel drive axles from an L series but the spline count is supposedly 22? how or what cv's does this match up with!!!???!!!???
Any help would be extremely grateful,
Thanks,
Deano

yeah you don't use L series driveshafts - whoever told you that is completely incorrect.
Don't worry about getting involved in working out different spline counts....As per the Crossbred documentation you just need 100% standard Liberty front driveshafts (they are practically the same between turbo, non turbo etc). Are you sure they are too long? Maybe they just aren't seated all the way into the hubs?

G'day Andrewt,
I have got the driveshaft from the wreck that I got the knuckles from and supposedly two new driveshafts for a gen 1 liberty, the new ones are about 1cm longer in overall length. The new one has 3 bands on the axle shaft and the old one has 1 band. the new one matches to a front wheel drive liberty, and the old one matches to an awd liberty, there is another one listed with two bands for the auto front wheel drive liberty as well.
So can you just order the shaft or do you have to order the whole driveshaft? How do you know which one you will get?

I didn't think the difference between the various models of EJ driveshaft actually made enough difference to prevent them from fitting but I might be learning something new here.

If you want to swap just the shaft only then I'd advise visiting Alan's CV Joint on Osborne Park. They'll make sense of anything.

It's not the shaft it's the inner and out cv's.
the one you can get for the front wheel drive liberty gen 1 has slightly longer and bigger cv's (mainly the outer one)compared to the awd liberty.
I spoke to C.V.Joint, they were really helpful and had plenty of advice to give!
The bands on the shaft seem to represent what driveshaft fits what model,
front wheel drive manual 3 rings, front wheel drive auto 2 rings, awd man and auto 1 ring. Although the shafts maybe the same length the cv's are slightly bigger(therefore spline count is different as well). It's only 1-2cm but each side that causes a lot of binding.
Cheers for the help guys,
Dean

no worries. Post up some pics and more details of your car sometime when you have a minute, I'm sure ppl will be interested to check it out.
It wouldn't happen to be a white touring wagon? Justin's old car?

It's just an L series wagon, a member on here had it "singo" and he said the engine was done by a guy off this forum, not sure who though?
I bought it with the crossbred kit ready to be put on, although the rear discs didn't fit the calipers as he had calipers for solids not vented, and the front driveshafts are for a front wheel drive liberty making them to long for the changeover as the inner and outer cv's are substantially bigger in length.
Will post up some pics next week when it's up and running again!
Cheers.:)
