swapping US 5MT for Aussie D/R 5MT
I've got a link http://www.ausubaru.com.au/showthread.php?t=16613 with some questions on Australian transmissions.
I want to swap my USA 5MT (95 legacy 2.2 NA) for a D/R 5MT with a usable low gear (preferrable 1.59:1 but 1.44:1 would be cool too) and preferably 4.11 final drive.
As such, I'm looking for a good, used Forester transmission, e.g from a wrecked rig that someone is parting out.

I have a RUNNING gen 1 EA71 1980 BRAT with an extra motor and some parts (like a windshield and Subaru factory winch-mount tube bumper) to TRADE for a good used gen 1 forester dual range AWD Aussie gear box. . .

I think FXT manuals have the 1.44:1 low I'm looking for, I just don't know if they're 4.44 or 4.11 FD..

Do you have a link to "OZ wrecker", or do you just mean checking with any Australian junk yard? I do have a couple inquiries to AU junk yards (from liks I got from another Subaru thread)
I'll try a friend of a friend who does car work, he may know those circles..

I'm pretty sure the Forester XT manuals don't have low range here in Oz - I believe Subaru thinks the low end torque is sufficient just with normal gearing. I can sort of vouch for that since I never had any problems with low-rev torque (mind you I drive and auto).
Not quite sure on this, but on the diff ratio I seem to recall the low range manual gearbox is 4.44 and everything else is 4.11. I might double check this tonight.

In other news, I've found some tech info (subaru of Australia, Forester Technical Description and 04 XT Technical Description Supplemental) at subaruforester.org that gives AUS 03,04 and 04XT fozzy gearbox info (along with everything else, it is the Forester tech flier essentially).
It looks like 03-04 4EAT had a 4.44 FD and 4.11 FD in the 5MT while the 04XT had 4.44 FD in the 5MT but NO low gear. All 03 and 04 5MTs with 4.11 FD had a 1.196 reduction low gear...

My 95 legacy 5MT is geared as such:

with a Viscous (4kgf) center diff and an open front diff
So i geuss the 03-04 AUS forester X and XS 5MT is geared a touch shorter than my 95 legacy, and with a shorter final drive (4.11 vs. 3.90).
The low gear sux (1.196:1), but i don't even have that. So I could do AlpineRaven's EA82 low gear swap to get a 1.59:1 low and have a 4.11 FD forester box, with a bit shorter gears than i have now, which would give me a more torque-y driving experience which would be a touch quicker off the line, higher revving at highway speed, better towing ability and FUN off-road!!
Am I reading those numbers about right?

Hey Mark.. I'm not 100% sure on the later boxes but the early Forester boxes are Dual Range 4.111 final drive which is still a great box if you're going to put behind a 95 Legacy and with AP's very nice thread, you can see how to put the EA Dual Range gearset in giving you a great gearbox. I'm going to do this conversion to my L.Series Offroader but I'm using one of your RXII gearboxes giving me the capability to lock the AWD diff.

Seems like 97-98 FOZ 5MT boxes are 4.11 FD with 1.447:1 low, 4-bolt bell housing, 99-02? are as 97-98, but went to 8-bolt bell housing. I think later foz boxes (03-08?) kept the 4.11 FD but went to the 1.96:1 low.
It seems for my purposes going with the stock foz box, any first gen, would be great... Down the road, if i want more low, i could do the EA low gear swap, but a 45% low reduction is a LOT better than the NO low I currently have!
For now, I think I'm looking for a gen 1 Forester 5MT. If I end up getting a 99-02, I'll fill the extra holes and call it good, enjoyig the lower mileage/KMage, newer box. If i go with a 97-98, it'll be ALL bolt-on bolt up, but maybe higher mileage/KMage. But even a 97 is newer than my engine
