EA82 Oil Pump - seal kit?

Post by MidcoastScooby » Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:01 am

Hi, I thought I'd put my questions in here rather than the General Chat coz it's obvious this is where these questions go, doh!

EA82 oil pump in an L-Series. I'm suspecting this is the problem of the heavy oil leaks I'm getting. Oil is everwhere from the CV line downwards and back to the gearbox. Oil is also baked onto the lower exhaust manifold on the left hand side.

The car is on blocks as I'm finishing off the caliper repairs and I want to have a go at this as well. I haven't had a chance to give the engine a degrease to better pin point it but from what I've read these pumps are notorious to leak/crack and most probably the culprit.

I checked with Bursons for a seal kit, they reckon it no longer exists but they are sure someone still has complete oil pumps and will check around. I told him to wait till I spoke to you guys for better clues.

If it is the oil pump can I get just a seal kit or do I need a new pump as the Burson's guy suspects. If I track it down myself who can I get one from? How much am I expected to pay for one?

According to the Gregories workshop manual it appears straight forward but any tips or tricks to help before I start?

Thanks in advance.

Go to your local Subaru dealer and ask for these;
806945020 - O-Ring
15066AA000 - Gasket
806718090 - O-Ring

That's the "kit", should be around $30.

also check the oil seal on the crankshaft, about $13, worth doing while you have all the front bits off. if it leaks on the timing belts they deteriorate.

Wow what a shock it was to climb under the car to source the leak. It was absolutely black everywhere and having my son drive the car on 4klm of dirt road to our property nearly weekly for over a year the dirt and oil combination was enough to pave our driveway!

Took the sump guard off to see that the sump bolts were *all* finger tight! Fark me dead! As I was running out of time and the car needed to be used I tightened all the bolts and left the sump guard off. It was enough that the leaks have slowed down, according to the oil drops on the flattened box I lay on the ground under the car when second son drove it back. At least I couldn't smell oil burning this time!

This weekend we'll give it a thorough clean down and have a better look. I'll have a look around the engine and check all fasteners and then inspect for leaks again after my son drives it around for day. But I think I may found the main culprit...and it seems just in time. I think I better get new gaskets everywhere anyway and do them all in one sitting.
