Searching for a needle in a haystack

Hi all,

So here begins my laborious, intensive, depressing and uneventful search for a very hard-to-find Subaru part - the twin Hitachi carburettor setup (with manifold etc) that came with the dual-port head EA81 engines.

Some of you may ask why bother with this - and it is indeed a good question you ask. Personally, I like the EA81. It is a solid, reliable engine and with this upgrade would go well enough to make it bearable - I'm not after a race car. Also, the setup would be going on an EA81 that has barely done 30 000km - no need to pull this engine out yet, although some might argue that I should do that for preservation's sake.

I have rung around wreckers, hunted through the Internet, posted on forums, spoken to friends and generally torn my hair out, especially when I missed an eBay auction for this exact thing by two days.

Now that I have beat around the bush, we move on to the "point" of this post. I would like some suggestions please as to where I should be trying to find one of these setups.

And finally, if one of you has such a setup lying around that you would be willing to part with then I will be forever grateful.

I hear rebuild kits for these are VERY hard to find? Can anybody shed more light?

Understand your quest

The twin carb set up on the ever reliable EA81 is very desirable.

2 suggestions -

Subawreck in Adel - not that he (Paul) would have any in stock as such, but has a least a couple of customers who have them on their vehicles - never know your luck...

Other is the US - rumor has it they are slightly less hard to come across - try USMB for a start.

Then there are the also gyrocopter nutcases that like subie engines - maybe worth a shot googling them??

HT 413 is the carby kit I got for each of mine. Goss or fuel miser brand

Ask your parts guys if they have that listed and available

DCG 306W R8 302

are the numbers etched on mine

Found reference to Fuel Miser brand for normal single carb on EA81 and it is HT425, so i say go research Fuel Miser HT413 and you will find kit TIMES TWO to do twin carbs

Apologies - another question - is it possible to fit an auto choke to each of these carbies?

No sorry - been some time since i've had NA cars and mucking around with the dream of twins...hmmmm...twins

I do recall a set up with essentially a carb on each cylinder head, with a complicated linkage system

Steptoe, much for yours?!? Can The Phantom save the day??

mine have tiwn manual chokes - not in use as i run LPG through them now, removed venturi guts, floats, blocked up acc pump holes etc

Carb over each head was safari set up or NZ rally pack from the dealers in NZ

its at times like this that I wish I had taken photos of my twin carb setup as it had twin auto chokes and the factory aircleaner. it was a bugger to get gasket kits for as one carby had a different gasket kit to the other.

it is somewhere on the West Australian coastline

I sold the wagon to a guy in Lancelin (north of Perth) and it was never heard from again

I've known Paul for 15 years...everything is for sale, you just need to offer enough of that sweet sweet folding green!!

I made a factory look air filter box out of about three single carby housings all cut up and spot welded up for me by an old panel beater and it actually sat forward a smidge enough to wear a 14 inch spare, painted in close to original blue too
