How to take the 'slop' out of the gear-shifter?
howdy guys, just after a way to remove the movement in the gearstick , i went to subaru and they gave me two washer looking things.
pulled it all apart today and have no idea where they fit. noticed alot of movement in the cup? at the bottom of the gearstick! i see its a plastic sleeve around the metal base of the stick, so modded that a little, now have a firmer feel
but what about the actual linkage to the gearbox? is that supposed to have LOTS of movement? and is it only supposed to have a split-pin holding it in?

Hi
You have to install the bushes from under the car
Follow the gear leaver from the top till you see a nut and bolt and the shift rod it has a kink in it and is about 20cm long
The two go there but you should have got four the other two go at the other end of the shift rod
Just look and see what ones are worn the most and put them in that one or get the other two
You won't believe the difference it makes

i have taken the split-pin out, and could not pull the bit off, is there a C clip or something else i should be removing? almost had a crowbar trying to jimmy it off with no luck!yarney wrote:The only other place it could be is at the bottom of the lever but you have done that
Take out the shift rod (with the u on the end) and put the pins back in while it's out and see how much slack there is

Do a search, There is a good thread on here with step by step instructions. all it involves is cutting a slot at 90 degrees to the roll pin then replacing the roll pin with a nut and bolt!

I have the same shifter set up im using in my ej conversion, its currently being converted to a short shifter by a friend with a lathe, welder etc, as you cannot buy one for a gen 1 lib. Bush #5 seems to be the cause of excessive slop on my set up, everything else seems to be in fine shape.
Cheers, mark
