Going to look at a wrx for sale

Post by preno » Tue Jul 27, 2010 10:32 am

Hey guys, tonight ill be going to have a look at a 96 wrx that a mate has for sale.

i dont know much about these so is there anything specific i should be lookin at? doesnt come with a rwc so what are things that are prone to breaking or wearing quickly on these models?

its also been hit in the rear so will need a new boot, bumper and tail lights. does anyone have a rough estimate on what these would be worth? does anyone have them laying around an would like to part with them?

any info would be great!

cheers

matt

biggest problem with the gc8 wrx is the gearbox. They tend to blow easily and if its had a fairly tough life that would definately be a thing id be looking at. Listen for whining gears, and crunchy synchros when changing gears.

However it may be making no noise and it may still let go, theyre sort of a ticking time bomb, but then again it may be fine.

The ej20 motor is pretty bullet proof, but just check for all the usual car stuff, coolant, oil, leaks etc etc.

Suspension and stuff may be ready for replacement at that age also.
my07 Outback
my13 Hyundai i45(shhhh)
my02 Gen3 Liberty limited ed.

previously
L-series wagon, LSD, EJ20turbo, 29in tyres, 'wanky wagon'
2000 gen3 outback, lifted, otherwise stock.

also (as with most car purchases) it would be an idea to check the compression of the engine. It's only bulletproof until it gets shot. Sometimes they can still run quite well with low compression on one cylinder.

id go with dibs option
ive never liked buying or selling with mates, had to fix one up for a freind.
he sold his car to a mate a YEAR later the buyer came back saying the brakes were worn and all normal issues that a car does and says its my mates fault, well to stop a major argument he ended up paying for a lot of the stuff

haha righto mate, how much u asking? may be out of my price range me thinks.

Anyway a bit bout this one, after the prang it has just been sitting in his driveway only being started occasionly. engine had a slight squeal when it started up, i think it must of been the belt as the whole engine was rather dirty. but did run well. gear box was tight.

now for the fun stuff. in the prang the end of the chassis got slightly bent. sounds bad yes but he has a quote to fix it for $500.

also had a road worthy done about 2 months before taken of the road.

asking $3000

just after opinions whether or not its a good buy. i do understand it will be a bit of a gamble as it was in a prang.

cheers

i wish Andrew.
now he doesnt sell anything, any cars hes finished with he either trades up or sends straight to the wreckers, a different wreckers each time.
Im hoping to get some money out of him for the rally car
