ej20t conversion for 1990 liberty.

hey everyone i've planning on doing a ej20t conversion into my 1990 libety wagon and was looking for approximate estimations on how much it will cost to have an autosparky (or if anyone is interested and has the know how) wire in the harness, my dad and i can do the mechanical side of things but want the harness done for us. planning on doing it end of this year during my uni break when i don't need it everyday

not yet but i'm not planning on doing it until the end of this year while uni is on break as i need the car most days of the week for football/university. this also gives me a chance to source everything i need in the time being.

i surf quite a fair amount so it would need to be quite capable off road which i have outback struts springs etc ready to go in for but will this cause huge issues with cv wear with the extra angle on the cvs and the extra output with the ej20t.

Outback strings and struts will cause some extra stress but very little as they are only 1" taller than the standard ones (depending on the model but I'm assuming you have get Gen2 ones) If you're looking at taking the car to the beach then I think the EJ20T will help. Is your Liberty a AWD model?

yeah it's all wheel with the low-hi gearbox aswell

i'm assuming however i'll have to change the gearbox to run the ej20t or will it hold up?

The dual range box will be fine if you don't flog it. Pretty well goes for any Subaru 5 speed box with a turbo. First and Second gear let go quite often when you give them a hard time. Drive it like you own it not stole it and it will be fine. That doesn't mean you can't put your foot down, just don't race with it.

It's always better to use the Turbo box for the first reason is it comes with the 1/2 cut (if that's what you end up buying) and and secondly the Turbo box has a lot higher/tougher clutch setup.

You can use other boxes like Brett has mentioned but you have to be aware of the problems so you can look after your parts.

yeah i called up a guy today about one and today and he quoted $4000 for a v6 sti with 130,000 on the clock which should be within the price range come october/ish but i'll get more prices to get a feel for what i should be paying. thats with tailshaft and diff.

$4g is about average for a STi 1/2 cut. Just tell them you don't need any panels and bolt on stuff i.e. headlights, etc..

May I suggest a gt or xt forester cut. The diff ratios (4.444) on the gearbox will be much better suited if you want to take it off road and put larger tyres on.

Not as good offroad as a d/r box but better than a std wrx box.

pretty sure v2 sti's are 4.44 anyway if he goes that way...

Thats right but v2 sti 1st gear is 3.166

Where a xt forester is 3.454 so still about 10% lower which is about the same as the difference in the tyres.

He is talking about a v6 sti, which is probably a 6 speed but I think the forester 1st gear is still lower when you do the math.

Anyone want to swap a v2 sti for a forester box?
I have a forester gt box in my ute and dont like it must as all the gears are to low in my case?
