It could of been some ones personal import then sold at a later date, or come under the rules were the car was not sold in Australia, there is a few but not many about.

Correct, The Green Machine was in a batch of privately imported subies about 10 years ago. They went through quite a process as it wasn't done properly first time around. You can definitely privately import a JDM vehicle for road use - there's just a fairly long winded process of doing it... there are some WRXs that can only be used as race/rally cars however I believe this is more due to the way they are imported more than an attribute to the car itself. So long as it meets EPI standards, ADRs etc and is roadworthy you can put it on the road. All the new model Mitsubishi Delica 4wds you see around are all JDM import.

Nice to see we have been found by someone in Japan - Welcome ! Many JDM cars are still arriving here or have been in last few years to be used on the roads. Only a few years ago it was how the car came into the country that determined whether it was ever to be road registered. If someone used a loop hole in the import duties (TAX) rules just to get the car in, achieving reduced or no tax resulted in that car not getting on road as it was brought in for parts or for race track. I know of a fella importing his Lexus IS250, being able to import current model as his is AWD, an option not available in Australia.

There are a swathe of cars that cannot be imported into Australia for various reasons - such as protecting the local manufacturer or distributor.

Examples of Subaru cars NOT allowed in: Subaru Dex, Forester (between 2/2004 & 5/2007), WRX (3/98 to 8/98). In non-Subaru, it is all over the place - Ford F-series (so grey market guys couldn't go around Ford's RHD imports), Toyota Altezza (Lexus IS200/IS300 here, but with the hi-po engine), pretty much every RX7 from the 90s, and of all things Hyundai Getz (why would anyone bother?).

There are a few options if you really wanted a banned JDM model (eg. buy one that was brought in before the rules were tightened up, first someone o/s who has owned the car you want for >12 months and have them move here, live o/s with the car you want for 12 months and bring it back with you, bring it over for off-road/racing use only, and so on).

Generally you cannot import cars manufactured after 1989 that have also been sold here. You can import cars that have not been sold here but you will have to apply for approval before the car hits the shore. Hence for eg, the swathe of Skylines in Oz.

Personal imports are different - you can import anything as long as you owned it for more than a year.
