L series 5 speed into brumby?

Post by kona480 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 1:40 pm

Hey guys
after constantly changing my mind about cars I have started thinking about putting a 5 speed in the brumby so it's better for the highway etc. I have heard that L series gearbox works? how easy is it to do this? also how much would it cost?
thanks

brumby is a 92 model. How much work is involved? My dad has lots of mechanical ability while I am wanting to learn. And I have friends who are mechanics.

My understanding is that if you find a box from a carby EA82 it will bolt straight on, but you have to use the EA82 flywheel and clutch. Also I think there are some tailshaft mods you need to do, maybe it was an L series tailshaft you need?

it is quite easy to do, the L-series 5 speeds bolt straight up to the ea81. And as Pootcrum said will need a box from a carby model as i believe the efi/turbo models had a different spline count for the front drive shafts.

I ended up using a gemini clutch plate with the brumby flywheel and pressure plate and it works fine.

i also modified the original gearbox crossmember to accomodate the l series box. but there is a few different ways to do the crossmember. and if i was to do it again i would do it differently.

will also need to make a centre bearing mount if using the l series tailshaft. And make sure you get the same ratio diff to suit the box you get.

starter motor needs to be spaced out about 4mm i think

if you are wanting to keep the original brumby 4wd selector it just needs to be lengthened roughly 40mm, pretty easy to do. i did that an used the gear selector from the l series box.

thats all i can think of at the moment.

best way is to pull the engine & gearbox out, makes life easier.

there should be a few threads about it on the site just have a search for them.

cheers.

Preno, what and how would you go if you had to redo the gearbox cross member.
What did people use and gearbox mounts etc? is it a mix with L and brumby ones?

I ask this as i did the conversion but the gearbox mount are a pain and don't sit right. They were the old ones but are nearly torn completely. I want to get it done better before i buy new mount so they will last.

Thx

What i did was use the brumby's gearbox crossmember, rubber mounts and the metal mounts that bolt to the gearbox. did not use any mounts from the l-series.

basically the holes on the metal mounts of the 4-speed box just need to be filed out a little bit to be able to be bolted to the 5 speed box.

i then just bolted everything back up but i found that the gearbox was touching the body of the car which was making a shocking sound. So it needed to be moved down a little. but i drove around a while like that anyway and was all good apart from the knocking. i have read somewhere since then that there is a little bung or lug or whatever u wanna call it sitting on top of the gearbox that should be cut of before fitting as this is what hits the body of the car. but instead of pulling the box out and cutting that of i just pulled the crossmember out, cut the ends of and re welded them back on so that the middle bit sits lower. cleaned it up to make it look factory an its all good. even passed a rwc.

so if i was to do this again i would cut the piece of the gearbox to make it fit better and i would also pay a bit more attention at fileing the holes out in the mounts. file the mounts so that the gearbox sits as low was possible. i think if i had of done that then the box would have sat in pretty well.

hope this helps

also forgot to add b4, use the l-series clutch cable. fits in pretty well. some people weld or drill holes to secure it in but i have it just sitting there and hasnt budged in a year.

cheers

just been trying to imageshack a pick of the threaded boss that needs removal. No Go. Giles has shot if he can fit it in here. Essentially it is a useles threaded boss at the top right rear of the box at the shifter end.

Thanks for picking that up Mr Giles, imageshack did not give me any address to copy and paste. Tried twice, gave up.

took an awful lot of work to get 20 years of crud off it too, degreaser, wire brush, pressure wash, wax and grease remover - I can be anal at times :)
