'91 EA81 Brumby Belts

Post by Pootcrum » Mon Jul 12, 2010 3:15 pm

Hey Guys,

So I was playing around on the weekend trying to nut out a power issue I have when I noticed a sizeable chunk missing from one of my belts, the one running around the alternator, water pump and an idler pulley. Problem is I am having real trouble finding someone who can tell me the belt I need to replace it, not even Bosch could give me a straight answer.

The two potential candidates are 13A1105 and 11A0900 (both Bosch part #'s).

Surely there's someone in the community that has needed to change belts before and maybe knows a part number, or maybe the belt length and width.

I am at uni at present and the Brumby is at home so I cant measure it up right now but will be doing so when I get home, just thought maybe if I get a quick sure fire answer I could pick up the belt on the way home and get it done tonight.

Cheers for any help!

they should have a catalogue in the shop you go to.

Or remove the belt and take it in with you (of course the car will be undrivable without the belt)

Yeh the catalogue is where the problem is, there are two catalogues, one online and one in the store and they differ with which belt it thinks I need. And like I said I even called Bosch and they couldnt say which one I needed. At least the two belts are very different, and if it comes to it I will just measure it up tonight and that should tell me which one it is, but its another day without the ute, so I would like to nip it in the bud tonight if I can.

It's certainly possible, and the one I need is not the AC belt, I really wouldn't care too much if the AC belt was about to go, but one Bosch catalogue says quite clearly that the 1105 belt does water pump, alternator and idler, but its longer than the one the other catalogue suggests does the AC (the 0900). And I am fairly certain the AC belt is longer than the alternator belt. For something so simple, this is a pain. And it has been complicated by the guy at SuperHeap saying if I buy the wrong belt I cant get it refunded.

10A900 or 11A900 or 11A 915 all ring bells, some adjustment is there of course. Go the both of them?

EXCELLENT!

Subaru Genuine Part #809110370 relates to a V belt of dimensions 10.7x8x898 which is a Bosch 11A0900.

Thanks all for the help!

Turns out regardless I have to order one in which will take a couple of days, so I am still going to double-check measurements tonight. Will report back with hopefully a confirmation for future reference.

EDIT: Alright just got home and checked the belts. Lucky I didn't buy any... The belts on my girl are a Bosch 11A0890 (alt, WP, idle) and 13A1345 (AC, idle). So fair warning for those replacing belts, don't trust the catalogues because they are not always right, and in this case just plain wrong. If you went by the Bosch catalogue to replace your A/C belt on your 1991 Brumby for example, you would get a belt that is 20cm too short. At least for the belt I was looking for, if I had got the 11A0900, I could make up that 1cm with tension. Anyways, thanks everyone for your input and here's hoping someone in the future needing to replace belts finds this (or at least doesn't have the trouble I did).

Just in here to confirm my belt driving water pump and L Series alternator on my EA81 Brumby, alt sits on a cast iron AC bracket, AC by UNICLA or was it Clarion Unicla...it is BOSCH 11A900

Also some factors that may make belt selection difficult is the factory fit AC (or was it done at the dealer here) or after market AC installs that occured in their day. May have been differing bracketry therefore differing belt specs.

Couldn't comment on whether AC were factory or aftermarket/dealer, I am now curious though to find out what sort AC compressor I have.

I guess one of the issues that lead to so many belts being suggested as correct is the long lifetime of the EA81 and the many configurations it seemed to have throughout the 80's and early 90's. It just ends up being a case of measure your own belt (or ideally get a part number off the belt itself, unfortunately mine was worn) and get the belt specific to your Brumby. Having said that, and like I said before in some cases small differences in belt can be accounted for in tension, but others simply cannot.

When you identify parts, such as dizzy cap, rotor, ball joints, fuel filters, oil and air filter etc, just keep a record written on underside of bonnet in permanent marker - I do !

I was thinking of doing something similar, but keeping a little log book in the cabin, rather than writing it inside the engine bay, I'm just a little weird about it lol. I used to keep packaging and things, like the fuel filters, but then I just have a tool bag full of cardboard.

Yep fun fun! Been there and done that as well. Lucky for me the supercrap that was still open late on a sunday arvo had the correct belt in the end - after 3 visits! The listing in the bosch book is very confusing - you need to find the belt description that leaves something out - I can't remember what that something is though...

And unfortunately I can't just go and check the number on the belt under the bonnet - 1) the weather is shite and 2) it's be an 8hr round trip...

All the best with it, you'll get there eventually - then love your brumby again cos its up and running!

Cheers
