HID conversion

Post by jimmeh14 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:14 pm

Hey all :)
Today my HID kit that I bought off eBay got delivered :D
everything that i needed was included and the installation was pretty simple.
I got my HID's to work on the headlights but when I turn on the high beams the headlights start flickering and neither of the highbeams turn on
I have a '95 liberty gen2 that had standard lights but i picked up a set of jap spec headlights with the projector lamps for 44$ at the wreckers.
The standard headlights only had one bulb with both headlights/high beams on the one with the three pin connector.
I tested which connector was what and hooked them up accordingly ;
HID positive to headlight positive, HID negative to ground
High beam bulb positive to high beam positive and i stripped back another ground.
I will post up pictures of the wiring but I am so confused as to why they don't work. I'm going for road worthy soon and I need them to work ASAP!
help! :(

not sure what the rules are over in QLD but in WA HIDs have to be in self levelling headlights to be legal.

sounds like you have an earth incorrect to me. Also try flipping the positive and negative around as subarus are negatively earthed. To get my hids to work in my gen3 lib i had to hook the positive to the negative and negative to the positive.

if you make sure your headlights are in good condition they will be fine. Just got to adjust them down abit.

L-series headlights have a bad habit of the reflector breaking away from the assembly meaning the reflector is loose and it sends light everywhere creating pretty bad hot and cold spots.

Other than that is was easy as broooo

Take the HIDs off when you get RWC done for it..

The centre plug is common - has to be connected to ground, left and right is either low or full beam - you should be able to get full beam at the same time as normal headlight.
There is a wiring diagram somewhere.. If you cant find it - let me know.
Cheers

I bought a kit from jaycar and incredibly easy to install all I had to do was hook the fused 12v to the battery and ground two earths and the rest all just plugged in! One thing to note I made sure I got the high low kit as opposed to the cheaper single range kits! and it just plugged straight into the headlight plug so come defects or RWC all i need to do is swap bulb and plug them straight back in....
87 targa brumby (Neglected),
92 targa brumby (weekend runabout),
97 Lifted Outback (Dailey drive),
05 outback safety (Too cheap to pass up),
90 model liberty (was to be scrapped instead sold to workmate)
+ others.

One of my L's headlights rocks around inside when removed, but been OK when driving. Glad I am not the only one.

I did the same as tex but mine were from ebay and put in my gen 1 liberty

Are they hi/low or just low? you need hi/low in a single bulb head light or you won't have high beam that could be the trouble
