1992 Liberty fwd gearbox

Post by graham7773 » Wed Jun 16, 2010 7:27 pm

Need a bit of advice. My 1992 EJ22 Liberty fwd gearbox is making growling noises. Not clutch thrust bearing as the noise stops when the clutch pedal is pushed down. I am guessing input shaft bearing. I want to know how to change the bearing. I am told that I have to split the gearbox. Can somebody run me through the steps to do the job? Just one more question, what should I expect to pay for an EJ22 motor?

Have you tried changing the gearbox oil first?
Normally input shaft bearing doesnt fail before the gearbox's bearings so i dont believe it would be input bearing because its a such a big bearing.
How to do it? - have a quick look at my signature but i know its not specific topic but will give you a drift idea.

You do need to split the gearbox open to access since its FWD box. If it was dual range then its kind of different story but complicated (its still easier to split the box anyway)

How much would you expect to pay for EJ22? Depends where you are, I can get complete long block with manifold etc etc for approx $220, EJ22 bare is around $160 from pick a part type of wreckers.

Back to the growling noise, there is a bearing on the flywheel, i think its 6201 bearing that could be gone but its too small to pick up, mine was buggered when i did the clutch. I would say something is wrong inside the gearbox, is there any noise when your not accelerating downhill (in gear downhill ie. 70kmh in 5th)?

Nah AP - to me it sounds like its the throw out bearing. Putting some pressure on the throw out bearing can make it go quiet. I've had one that was dodgy and it always made a noise until you put some pressure against it.

Either way you'll have to remove the box...
