Hi welcome to the forum, Others may have a different opinion but personally I would be going for an liberty instead of an imprezza since the imprezza is just the cheaper nasty version and doesn't quite have the same comforts, But open for debate!
87 targa brumby (Neglected),
92 targa brumby (weekend runabout),
97 Lifted Outback (Dailey drive),
05 outback safety (Too cheap to pass up),
90 model liberty (was to be scrapped instead sold to workmate)
+ others.

yep thats what it is. then you have the swiss knife of subaru the L series. kinda old now but still the best of the lot (to me anyway.) in the earlier model soobs.

as for modding a RX impreza - yep do the suspension. that way you will learn how to drive first before becoming a hoon and killing yourself in the thing.

Performance parts as in go faster for the RX is usually the WRX motor etc so stuffs your immediate plans. The RX still has the smart looks and is gonna go as hard as you gonna need on your P plates so you can live to be older and experienced and sensible enough to one day drive a turbo. Depending on your money dept if it is go you want and need consider a six cylinder H6 lib or a SVX !! Unlees the killjoys have banned them too

Other thing to think of though, I dont know if its the same in Vic but in NSW at the moment p platers cant drive any turbo vehicles so that rules out a WRX.

Libertys are nicer then imprezas. My mum has had an RX for quite a while, they are still an OK car but dont really compare too well to a WRX.

haha thanks guys, in temrs of suspension i would be going for a full pedders set up, and i am actually in the middle of a defensive driving course so i should be getting to be a better driver anyway.

yea it is the same for vic, no turbos or superchargers, no v8s aswell, thats why i was looking at an RX imprezza not WRX but i might start looking at a lib now. sorry for the silly questions but are the engines pritty much the same? i know they are all boxer engines but have they got diffrent things like inlets and diffrent heads?

YEP. sizes too EJ16, EJ18 single cam, EJ20G in a WRX is turbo twin cam. Lbs were EJ20 and EJ22 or RS lib EJ22G G is for turbo. I THINK WHAT SAID IS TRUE above

same between IMp and Libs? you ask?

Statistics showed [when configured in a way the person wanted to dis(tort)play figures] , that sales reps who did defensive driver training got swollen head and actually came to grief more often. WATCHOUT !

Dunno, it may have been 20 litre..told you not know much, just there is 16,18 and they had to be in something!
Also disgusted to see some early Imps had drum brake rears, erk.
