Servicing 1999 Liberty

Hi Guys,

New to this forum, I drive a 2009 FPV GT sedan but my girlfriend has a 1999 Liberty 2.5. (Gen3 from what I have looked at on the net-??) Its time for me to give the car a service, shes only had it since december (bought off her brother), its done 255,000 kms so its getting a bit long in the tooth.

I was just wondering whether there are any things I should take particular care with in regards to this car, this service I plan on doing oil, filter, air filter and possibly the fuel filter and replace some light bulbs that have gone.

Also how many litres of oil do these cars take? Ive always had Falcons my 9 years of driving, ranging from AUIII XR6's, BA XR6's, BF Super pursuit and an FG GT so im use to having to buy around 6 litres to fill these things up!

I dont want to spend heaps in maintaining this car as we plan to upgrade it to a new one next year hopefully, but at the same time I want to make sure its reliable and safe.

Sorry to here the you own a Ford but I'm sure you got it given to you

As for servicing your girlfriends Subie then I would suggest you at least do the basics.. Oil and filter change but before that, use a can of Upper Cylinder Cleaner (from Subaru) then check all the usual things like all fluids, belts, brakes, cv shafts, etc.. I would get hold of a gregorys (or similar) books and that will have some good tips in it too

This may sound like a dumb question but with the can of upper cylinder cleaner where do you spray this??

Also where is the fuel filter located on these cars? can anyone help.

I guess i should buy a gregorys manual but as I say we plan to upgrade it next year so the least I spend on it the more i can spend on the new one.

No probs bud

Upper Cylinder Cleaner goes inside the inlet manifold.. just remove a small vacumm line close to the plenium chamber and follow the directions on the can

Fuel Filter is the fuel tank and won't need replacing unless it wasn't done at the 200,000km service

I know you're thinking of selling the car later but the manual it worth buying.. you can sell/trade it to a book store later if you need another manual later

EJ22 takes approx 4 litres of oil. Dunno about EJ25 & EJ20.

yeah they all take the same 4Lish...chuck some HPR 40 in there cos of the higher km. Subis thrive on penrite. HPR50 works great on higher km noisy motors.

Pretty sure it's closer to 4.5L on the EJ's, use a good quality oil & I'd go for at least 50 weight with those K's

Hey guys did the oil change, everything seems fine, thought id do the auto gearbox while it was at it. The book says 9.5 litres?? well the car only took about 2.5 ???

The belts are noisey on it too.. whats the best way to fix this??

Which belts? Timing or Fan belts.. if it's the fan belts then try tightening them a touch.. if it's timing belt, then it's a sure bet it needs changing (at 255,000kms it's hopefully been changed at 200,000kms)

Which belts?
If its alternator/Power Steering/ A/C Belts are noisy - replace them to new ones..

Timing is supposed to be changed every 100,000kms..

Gearbox is approx 3.5 - 4 litres (dry) as well (manual) Dunno auto but sounds about right - 2.5 litres wet.

Are you checking it when the car engine is running and in park?

2.5 litres doesn't seem right at all

you did put the fluid into the transmision and not the differential didn't you

It is a common mistake

Hey guys..

Definately the AUTO, dip stick on the right hand side of the motor back near the fire wall. It was empty when i dropped it (only 2.5 litres came out), so i only put 2.5 litres back in and its full....

Obviously there would be oil fed to a transmission cooler or the radiator would there? so to empty it all out you would have to drain all that aswell??

I havent looked at the belt issue yet, got too carried away with the service / replacing wipers / bulbs / giving it a wash on sunday arvo. Its a good reliable car for its age / kms, makes me want to buy a new subaru but ill probably go the Focus XR5 Turbo route..

Drivers or Passenger side? not trying to be funny.. just some people say right side cause the are looking from the front (to the rear).

As the Auto pan holds about 5 litres of trans fluid so to only have 2.5 litres drain out then something is not right. The total system holds almost 10 litres but you'll never be able to drain that all out without damaging to box

Sometimes it's best to drain the system 2 or 3 times (over a few months period) to completely renew the system.

No probs.. I'm sure your doing things all right but my only other thought is someone (previous to you owning it) may have replaced the dipstick with the incorrect one

otherwise I have no other ideas.. sorry
