Difference between Foz and WRX EJ20G's

Post by Gannon » Tue May 11, 2010 8:50 pm

I have a mate who is convinced that he has a 2000 WRX engine in his VW notchback

I rekon its a GT Forester motor.

It was a crate motor, is controlled by a haltech, has TGV delete and a RS WAIC and a VF34 running 22psi and makes 260whp through a VW Combi gearbox with straight cut gears

He showed me the turbo that came off it, it was a TF035, it also had an EGT sensor and an up-pipe pre-cat.

He is still convinced its a WRX motor.

Whatta ya reckon?

Is there another way to tell?

AFAIK.. they are the same.. it was the ECU that was tuned different :???: but I'm not 100% sure

As far as I understand it. The diff between a WRX an XT forester is the computer and size of the turbo. Don't quote me on the details though.

Im referring to the 2.0L Forester GT's and 2.0L WRX's

Ive read that the cams are different, but is there a way to know from the outside?

My mate mentioned something about some lines moulded on the cam covers.

Yes.. 2.0Ltr GT Forester and 2.0Ltr WRX are the same engine but they have different ECU tunes and I forgot that the turbos are also different.. Camshafts may be slightly different but not enough to notice the difference.. Cam covers are no indication.. Early EJ20T had lines on the top of the cover and smooth below.. late EJ20T have smooth on the top and bottom of the covers.. this is for Forester and WRXs

The only other way to tell, is to give Subaru the year of manufacture (of the engine) and engine number :)

gt foz i think - but it is not easy tot ell from the outside. being a crate motor i presume he got the turbo with the motor. the td035 is not used on any model wrx. but the gt's don't have tgv's either so not sure why he has tgv deletes - who knows!

the cams and heads are very different to the wrx of the same area. slap some wrx heads and cams and a td04l turbo on it and it will still spool fast and make about 70hp extra : )
