Clock/Trip Computer showing Gobbldegook in 84 Touring Wagon

There's another prob that I have with my Suby is that my Clock/Trip computer is showing (when it finally lights up) 88:88 for the clock and generally the same for all the other options.
Has anyone else had that problem and how (if possible) is it fixed? I have also been told that it may interfere with the digital speedo at times but so far I've been lucky..

Could someone please help as it would be a handy option to have working (as long as the trip computer is trustworthy when operational)
