octane tuning an ej20g ?

Post by T'subaru » Mon Apr 12, 2010 9:37 am

Ive been told the ecu's on gen 1 ej20g's are set up for a pretty high octane used in japan. Have you guys found the need for tuning for the octane avail in AU? I think the octane in my area runs 89 to 95 reg to premium.
Thanks, Mark

No I had this conversation last time I was in the states, Over her our lowest (regular unleaded) octane is 91 ron. including the ethanol blend you can also purchase 95 ron. fuel but I generally buy the 98 ron. premium fuel. I believe our fuel is refined more to make our vehicles pass our stricter emission standards. But there used to be one place that sold aviation fuel with a ron. of 100 in canberra.
87 targa brumby (Neglected),
92 targa brumby (weekend runabout),
97 Lifted Outback (Dailey drive),
05 outback safety (Too cheap to pass up),
90 model liberty (was to be scrapped instead sold to workmate)
+ others.

I think you'll find the US ratings are different to ours (AKI ~ RON about 96 to our 100)therefore sounds lower to us, just use the best fuel you can afford, all JDM cars from the late 80's on are tuned to run on 100ron unleaded which is still rare in this country, my 97 STI motor runs fine on 98ron so a couple of points lower won't hurt.

depending how hard you look you can get most fuel in aus..
i know a few places you can get avgas (leaded), elf out of a pump, and a few other blends that are custom made.
BTW what is a ej20g? is it supercharged??

the G is correct term for one of the turbo EJ20's , that's all. They not really known as EJ20T as far as I know.

A lot of cars sold in Aus are recommended to run on Premium. Sometimes I don't think sales staff let on until the deal is done and dusted, if even then.
Sales pitch by a Lexus agent was that the engine computer tunes to suit the petrol, making fancy toy.s stand out amongst the crowd? We know this computer function as knock sensor :)

AVGAS is still rated as leaded is it?

Some SHELL sites carried 100 RON VROOM in last few years, cost heaps more, and was discontinued but it was not leaded, surely, illegal and would blow out cats!

I use to buy AVGAS at the aerodrome , from bowser to my tin drums, and each time I had to tell the guy I parked my little plane at a small airstrip. Never asked me what it was, what I flew for or accused me of using it in the hottie I drove in to put the drums into :)

Oh, hi Mark, you beat me to the answer. Did it really take me ten minutes to type that ??

yeah avgas is still leaded, the story i was given why was cause it is not proved if its as reliable as unleaded, and on the road if the fuel doesnt ignite well you lose power on one stroke, in the sky mmmmmm splat.................

ok yeah ive seen posts of them as ej20t and it made more sense to me to call them by that name
