if the top one has a honey comb in it than it is a cat the bottom is definitely a hot dog if you have a straight through muffler on the back it will drone with the hot dog you really need to run 2 of them you will thank your ears for it they are only cheap you wont notice notice much difference unless you get all the exhaust done. the cat on my gen 2 liberty was a twin entree job right where the to header pipes join into one i got quoted $400 for a new one or $400 to repipe the front end with a high flow cat. coupled with the rest of the exhaust it was friggin awesome went hard. i still miss my liberty i loved my baby

It's hard to tell really with the heat shields there etc. You really have to look inside. If there is honeycomb kindof material there then it's probably a catalytic convertor.
The aftermarket job below it is definitely just a "hotdog" resonator.

However I rekon the top one is just a resonator, not a cat, because with these Libs the cat is normally inbuilt as part of the "Y Pipe" headers that bolt to the motor.


With engine removal methods, I normally find lifting the engine up and out of the bay with a crane to be the easiest....however if it's just the motor you want to remove then I find it easier to separate it from the gearbox in the car then lift the motor out by itself. It's a bastard with the gearbox attached. Lots of pushing, pulling, re-angling etc.

If you want to remove both engine and gearbox then the other method of dropping it all out the bottom is quite easy....but just be aware that you are also removing all the suspension, crossmembers, steering rack - everything all at once. Really handy if you are planning to swap all that stuff out at the same time.

Thanks for your comments everyone. On the exhaust, it is definately a resonator. With the muffler I had on the back of scoobs I think they'll combine pretty well... we'll see in a couple of hours.

Yesterday I was lucky enough for El_Freddo to make the trek down to frankston. My computer is having a little skitz out trying to upload photos, so you'll have to wait for those.

Lots was accomplished! It was great having a super helper like El_Freddo for the day and I'm super grateful - thanks dude!

The entire lift kit is in, all suspension has been moved accross, brakes have been bled, ball joints changed and trailing arms swapped. The steering column was damaged when I dropped the engine out, so they were swapped too. Doesn't sound like much but it was a lot of work involved!

Today it's a matter of engine connections (wiring, air intake, clutch, hill holder etc), reinstalling exhaust and tailshaft, the radiator and bleeding the cooling system, reinstalling head and driving lights and transfering the stereo.

She runs! After a quick road block of a cut wire - one of the ignition wires was bypassed into the old alarm of the previous owner in scoobs and when I put the engine into Libby I forgot about it. Quickly linked that back up and she started up first time, no hesitation, nothing, just bam! Took a few seconds for the computer to sort itself out and now she's running smoothly and sounding good with the aftermarket resonator and factory muffler combination.

I'm so stoked! I'm heading into school today, so I'll make use of the internet there and put some photos up for you all.

I've been busy the last few weeks with work keeping me away from home, so I haven't had time to work on Libby. Today I finally got a bit of time, so I cleaned up the loom routing, removed the junk remains of the air suspension components and installed the driving lights' wiring.

I've changed the routing of their wiring and relay location - the relay now sits neatly in the space previously occupied by the air suspension lines and bracket behind the left strut tower, with the wiring running through the grommet vacated by the removed air lines. The wiring then follows the loom through the quarter panel and pops out under the main fuse box - nice and neat like its supposed to be there. I need to lengthen the lights' loom now though, as the right line is about 1m short and the left about 30cm.

This term's camps have been non stop, and this week is my final one for the term, so that'll mean I'll have time again to work in Libby - there's a good chance I'll get her over the pits before the trip down to the Otways late next month...

yeah but pine moulds to object and you get better surface contact, thus holding the lift better
