trailer plug up light fail L Series

Post by steptoe » Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:11 pm

I have just wired in a 7 pin trailer socket to my L Series sedan.

All lights were working correctly before I came along

Rather than use those squish connectors that can cause faults, cut wire strands etc, I used the RHS tail light plug from an MY and soldered its wires to an L Series RHS tail light assy loom plug so I can interface between my sedans tail light and the loom with the splice off the patch cord rather than loom - call me ANAL but it is not the first time I have done it this way. I also used a tail light fit bolt as the trailer earth point so not to overload the earth in use at the back end of the car

Problem is now when tail lights are on, when brakes are on the RHS brake light does not work. When tail lights are off brake light works fine.

I may need to run a new earth from RHS brake bulb earth to car earth

The beauty of my instal is that if I strike a problem I can unplug bits rather than desolder etc, unplug the loom to tail patch cord and plug loom back in directly lights all work as they should

Anyone strike similar problem? In the past I have seen the display fixed when earth has been cleaned up..

Have not got anything plugged in at the new end yet and problem is already occuring

Sound like an earth problem to me, Just short term the earth off the indicator and see it works? If i does you know it must be an earth problem and run a new earth.
