EJ18 - how far can one be bored out?

G'day all,

I know the EJ blocks are essentially all the same, which has me thinking that I could "put" an EJ22 into an EJ18 block and get the EJ18 engine number put on my rego without having it engineered.

Plan would be, bore an EJ18 out to EJ22 specs, fresh bearings, rings etc, EJ22 heads and intake manifold, run by an EJ22 loom that's already installed an running an EJ22...

So how far can an EJ18 block be bored out? Does anyone know/done this?

i bought my car with a blown motor, put the spare in it and still have it registered as such, im not too sure if they would notice the difference between a EJ18 and EJ22?? size and the like.

best bet is to check the vin number and casting numbers, if there the same you could do it but honestly WHY..........

if you can get some photos of a bare block and post them and we can discuss

I have been told that you can just change the crank in an EJ18 from the EJ18 crank to and EJ25 crank (must be an early model EJ25 crank) use all the other Ej18 components and end up with a with a bigger cc motor not sure on the exact size but around the 2 litre mark Im sure if this is wrong I will be corrected

it may turn out way cheaper to get a bigger engine engineered

Ok, should have said, and thought most would know, but this is in my L series, it has an EJ22 in it.

Vicroads checks the motors capacity when changing an engine number. But if the block says EJ18 I can tell them its a 1.8 litre. When I told them its a 2.2 litre after the conversion was completed they told me to see an engineer. Yep, probably easier to pay an engineer but there's no satisfaction in that as they won't do the rest of the gear I want them to pass... I seriously don't see the need for engineers if they're not willing to work outside the VSI-8, that's what they're there for!

Not looking to stroke but have thought about it. Just want an EJ22 in an EJ18 block. Basically I would like to know if I can bore it out or if it would need to be re-sleeved, which would render this too costly...

Bennie yes I do know you have the EJ22 in your L series by using the internals of an EJ22 in an EJ18 block you are making a stroker motor and the only way you can realistically do this is to bore the block and re-sleeve it, a very expensive operation

machine as in preserve, the E18 off one block and stick it on where EJ22 used to sit ??

There's 9mm difference in bore between an 18 and a 22, and from memory I don't think there'd be enough meat in the cylinder walls to bore them that much. Will measure it for you as soon as I can.

Steptoe's idea sounds much easier - you could even go so far as to stamp your EA82's engine number on the EJ22, and no one would know the car had ever been modified. But that would be very naughty, and I'm sure no one around here would advise such a thing :rolleyes:.

Yeah I've never done that:;) But if you do do a re stamp make sure the numbers on the other block are destroyed so it can never be used in another car with the same engine No.:-D

Bennie if you're still interested in engineers approval the second lot of engineers i've been talking to here in Ballarat have been very helpfull. Despite been booked out for the next month (good sign?), they still took time to have a 15min phone convo with me explaining the whole process and looking up the legalities of some mods right then on the phone. They've also been recommended by Street Machine along with only 4 or 5 other engineers in the state of Vic.

I think the main problem for an engineer is even if you're getting approval for one illegal mod, they are still certifying your entire car as meeting ADR, EPA laws and a road worthy condition. So even if a 50mm lift is legal, they still need to know the vehicle meets ADR. That means stability testing (add 400 dollars here), and for the bigger tyres i'm guessing brake testing (add 200 dollars here). Add $600 for the engine approval and you're upto $1200.

What about removing the lift kit and big tyres and then having the motor engineered?

Venom, that sounds good mate. I'm thinking of just leaving it, can't be bothered and if the cops get me I'll do something about it then. And stop toying with my mind! I went looking at impreza's on ebay again last night, there's a nice looking one for $4g that's just asking to be lifted :D Money (and time) I don't have!

It'll go two ways if Ruby's busted: Get a touring wagon that's in mint condition and go from there for engineer's approval on all the mods, OR get an impreza as I've talked to you about ;) I'd love to do it, just money that needs to go to other places, like the wedding...
