fusible link burning out
Hey everyone.
My L series turns on and runs but the Fusible link that runs the battery/alternator starter etc eventually gets hot and burns.
If I take the alternator out of the circuit (disconnect it) the wire instantly stops being hot. Just wondering if there is anything connected to the alternator i should check or should i remove and replace the alternator?
thanks.

common problem. Nearly every l-series ive seen had this problem.
not sure of a cure. What causes it i believe is too much stuff running off the battery. Ie spotlights/stereo etc etc..not proven tho, jsut a theory.
the first thing i did to rectify was the beaf up the fusable link, got a peice of 8 gauge stereo power cable and used that, still burnt thru after a while tho.
Finally i went out and bought a circuit breaker, worked a treat. Used three of them for all three fusable links and the problem was gone.

Replaced the alternator and made my own link since no one in newcastle i went to had them. Seems fine so far, but havent got to drive it much as i now have a strange fuel problem.
If i put fuel in the carby it starts and runs for quite some time, but if i turn it off and try and start it again its like theres no fuel getting into the carby even though i checked the fuel line and it seems to be.

Maybe its your fuel pump is F'ed. and shorting the fusible link. this happened to me. check it out for sure.
fusible links are made of a set gauge wire which burns through BEFORE your wiring harness. best to have properones mate, as made up ones arent good. go to the wreckers, get all the links from the subes. wont cost much (nuthin if your good.) cheers buddy, Rohan Maxim

Also on the fuel thing - the L's have a momentary circuit on the fuel pump so if the engine stops the fuel pump stops pumping fuel in the case of an accident. So when the ignition is turned on the fuel pump will either pump for five seconds or not pump at all until the engine is cranking over.
When the engine is hot the fuel will evaportate if the soleniod on the carbie is stuffed, thus no fuel to start the engine until enough is provided by the fuel pump thus making starting hard to do...
I'd be swapping or reconditioning the alternator and see what happens to the fusable link. Appliances run directly from the battery and fused appropriately should not cause an issue with the fusable links burning out.
Cheers

Also go the wreckers and you can get this other fuseibly links , thatslide right it. Commonly found on Toyota's. They are plastic and are very easy to fit and find the right amperage. If i was near my ute i would take a picture as they are hard to explain. But look the same as the top left in this picture. And they don't get as hot and don't burn out without being overloaded.
The only downfall i have found is you can't put the top cover over the fusible links, but it still looks nice and neat i think anyway.
