hey guys, i have a 1999 impreza rx and have just recently started getting a progressively louder sqeaking noise from my front driver side wheel. The noise only really occurs at over 40km/h and gets louder as i get faster.
the only other information i can really give on it is that it appears to be from the rotation of the wheel as it can also speed up and slow down, and i have 185 thousand on the odo.
The wheel had no "play" in it when i had it jacked up, and i originally thought it was just a break problem so i replaced the brake pads, which were actually very worn, but this did not solve the problem.
i would apreciate any helpfull infromation, and thanks for reading my post.
Squeaking noise from front driver wheel
Does the noise change pitch or anything as u apply the brake??
What about when u turn? Any change in noise?
Could it be somehting rubbing on the rotor?? like the brake plate cover thingo??
I have a similar problem which keeps haunting me. Mine has progressed to doing it at slow speeds also.
Im not saying u have the same problem as me but so far i have replaced the brake pads, skimmed the rotors and replaced my wheel bearings. Everytime i do soemthing the noise goes away for a month or so and then comes back.

applying the brakes doesnt appear to make any change and i havent really been going too fast around corners since it started being so loud as im worried it could be a wheel bearing.
the pitch stays about the same at all times, and anouther thing i have noticed is that it has to heat up a little for it to start (10-15mins of driving around town)
when it was at its loudest the other day (before i changed brake pads) it was loud enough to hear the squealing bounce off cars as i passed them.
I'll pull the wheel and brakes off tommorrow and see if i can see any abnormal wear on or around the rotors
thanks for your reply, lacho

Have u checked the hub nut, it might be a bit loose. This was the diagnosis given to me for my car from a Subaru mechanic... they are wrong for me but might be right for u. These nuts are meant to be up very very tight.

i figured out it was nothing to do with brakes by jacking all wheels off the ground and putting the car on stands, taking the brakes off completly and driving the wheels fast enough for it to make the noise.
After this i called up my local subaru as well as some some cv joint and wheel specialists, and they both thought that is was a seal. i pulled everything out, repacked the bearing and got new seals, and havn't got the noise again yet.
