EJ18 have I got a lemon re import model
EJ18 have I got a lemon re import model
Hi new here but I just got a ej18 engine looks very clean very low Ks but it is an import and a single point injection model it came without the ecu wiring or throttle body. I did think this would not be a big deal as I wanted to run it with dual down draft 44 Webber's but now I realise that It comes with EFI dizzy and the shaft on the cam to dizzy looks fixed. The question is there a non EFI dizzy out there that will fit or any ideas.
Thanks
Thanks

Welcome vdubrod!
A couple of members on here will be able to help you out. A subaru fiori dizzy will do the trick from what I've been reading and someone's just working out another model of vehicle that's more available that may do the job as well. Can't remember who this is though...
Good luck with it, sounds interesting - what's it going into anyway?
Cheers

I am a Vw man and have a variety of things to put it in but I think the ej18 will go in my Karman Ghia I have read that these engines have around 100hp and I am hoping that I can get a little more with tuning the webbers. I think the subaru is the motor that vw always wish they built and does not matter what any one says you can not get big horse power out of a vw engine and be reliable and lasting so thats why i am into subies.El_Freddo wrote:Welcome vdubrod!

that vdub looks and sounds insane lots of time, money and work have gone into that
the adaptors need to be hand / machine made
the escort dizzy on this page (you need to scroll down the page)needs a small amount of modifying to get it to fit into place the fiori needs an adaptor as it has a smaller mounting area Justin35 has a picture of his adaptor plate you would need to ask him for it
http://www.prachapter34.com/converting_engines.htm
another thread with lots of discussion on the subject

I thought the Karman Ghia would be worth more with a stock motor - those things seem to fetch a fair price these days from what I understand! I started driving in a cut down VW beetle when I was eleven - dad and I rebuilt the engine before we got it going. Subaru bascially took a VW motor and watercooled it - take a look at an EA71, EA81 and you'll instantly see the similarities, even the dizzy is in the same place on the same angle! The EJ motor is what subaru have come up with as the EA evolved from its original configuration...vdubrod wrote:I am a Vw man and have a variety of things to put it in but I think the ej18 will go in my Karman Ghia I have read that these engines have around 100hp and I am hoping that I can get a little more with tuning the webbers. The gearbox is basically the same in layout too - then they added AWD...

as for the ghia I am no purist so I want reliablity and performance to the same performace out of 1.6 Vw as a stock non turbo ej20 would cost around 6 to 8 grand I can put a ej20 in for 2 grand and it be more reliable then the 1600 taken out to 1916 I want to just jump in and not hesitate to drive anywhere
I know about the ea81 I have a kombi with that engine in it has a webber on it and will cruise on 150km all day no matter what the tempiture is I also had another kombi with ea82 engine this went great too.
Hi Steptoesteptoe wrote:150 kph ? in a Kombi ? all day ? pushed by an EA81? I know a VW enthus that is shoving imported turbo Diesels in Kombis, coulda swore he said they weigh 2 tonnes. I'd love to be able to legally drive at that pace all day
a kombi wieghts the same as a early subaru it takes a little bit to wind it out but once she is at 150 will stay there. where can you go that fast on the way to the Birdsville Races was one place. Got pulled over doing 140 in it cop said "I know these things dont go that fast not sure if there is something wrong with the radar but I know you were speeding" so booked for between 110 and 120 this was outback NSW. So it does it alright and besides I not big noting how fast the kombi goes but how good the little engine is with the webber kit.

Why not get the multi point fuel injection system and run that on the motor? That'd be more reliable than the webber IMO.
Cheers

would be good if I could find it all I have no throdle body for it and it is a single piont injection system there is no wiring harness and no computer and I knew this before I got the engine but thought how hard would it be to run on carbys so without knowing that this has been done before I thought I would try to work it out but I did not realise the difference in the dizzys but I did know that ej18s can out with carb and dizzy but only overseas. I do like the idea of non complicated run system you know carbys dizzy and MSD. should get around 100 odd hp and in a car that weighs 780kgs that would be good for me as a street car. I have a beach buggy that weighs 500kgs with ej20 quad cam in it so thats the performance machine will be taking it super sprinting. Any leads on obtaining the right bit for ej18 would be appreciated as well if it is easier to go injected thats the way I will go but I thought the parts would be hard to get.

his album is here

awsome looking Karman Ghia and as for the kombi cool
I knew a guy when I was 14 who had an old grey motor (a 149 I think) in his kombi with a radiator mounted on the bullbar on the front and pipes running to the motor he could wind it off the speedo
the police were most unamused with it and placed a red sticker on the windscreen
a question about the distributor as it looks like the stand alone unit does it have a plug with 3 or 4 pins or does it have 2 wires coming out of it ?
and I know from speaking to a member from New Zealand that the carby and dizzy option were available there its just a matter of getting them to Australia
