Subaru brumby hub change and motor info

hi every one
just purchased an 89 subaru brumby with targa roof in fair condition with a 1.8 litre turbo and 5 speed box

I want to change the hubs over on the beast so that i can get cheaper rims and have the benifit of 4 wheel disc brakes

What hubs off which type of subaru can i use and is it an easy fit?

Also does any one have any info on the 1.8 l turbo engines that subaru produce

Hi,

Your engine could be an EA81 turbo (very rare) or an EA82 turbo (somewhat rare). You can find out by looking for the EA81 or EA82 stamp ontop of the motor.
If it's an EA82 somebody would have had to modify the chassis rails in the engine bay to widen them to allow the motor to physically fit.
Search this forum for information on either motor, there is plenty.

Regarding hubs, I think you have two main options here.
1 - stick with the old EA style hubs you have, and replace the rears with disc brake type. This will give you a fairly good brake upgrade for a cheap price - you can find disc brake rears (although getting abit rare) in turbo Vortex's or RX's.
2 - use a Crossbred conversion kit to convert to EJ hubs and brakes. This will provide you with a massive brake power upgrade and allow you to fit any mag wheel from a Liberty, WRX, Forester etc and yes, open up a much wider range of tyres etc.

thanks i when and had a look it is an EA82T

What sort of power can i get out of this motor and what psi is recomended for the turbo

Does any one know what sort of torque i can get from this engine

as said lots of info on EA82 turbo engines in that thread

what hubs are on your brumby at the moment?

does it have 5 or 6 stud hubs or is it stock subaru?

and if you are looking at getting rear discs for it you will be spending around 500 dollars for a second hand set of hubs, discs and calipers

they are rare and getting rarer

pretty much night and day, especially stopping quickly at higher speeds.

having driven multiple MY wagons and a few different brumbys all with drum rears

YES

no sloshy pedal when braking

no repeated pumping of the pedal to get enough pressure to make the drums work

no annoying clunk clunk clunk as the drum brakes slip

no adjusting of drum brakes every 4 weeks

no hugh piles of drum dust or brake mud (leaking slave cylinders) when you check your brakes

I like the ability to stop quickly and safely fron highway speed or from low speed in a built up area

I have noticed it is way more difficult to lock the front brakes since i put the discs on the rear with the drums the fronts locked under heavy braking quite easily
