speedo cable - L series

Post by twilightprotege » Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:46 pm

just thought i'd share a little thing i found this arvo.

i've recently lifted my car a bit more and naturally the speedo cable didnt fit. i read that the auto cable in the L is longer than the manual. this was not the case with my 87 rx manual and an 89 auto. they were exactly the same length

BUT

the 89 auto cable is in 2 pieces. i disconnected the shorter piece that connects to the gearbox and then essentially made the original manual cable fit to the extention. this was done by pulling off the end bit on the auto connection and putting it on the manual cable. i then filed the end of the manual cable to that it fit to the extension. then you have to cut off about 5mm of the plastic screw in thing that connects it to the gearbox and it's done.

it extends the cable by about 3-4" and that's the perfect length.

when i take the engine out again, i'll take pics of the things i changed to help explain, but it was relatively easy.

That is a good hint for upgrades...

Well done in discovery and sharing. That's what this place is for.

When I went from std height factory 4WD auto to std height 5 sp manual 4WD I found the auto speedo cable looked longer as it fitted to the LHS of the auto where we all now the manuals fit to the RHS. I left auto cable in place and made it fit to the manual box but ever since the speedo takes time to catch up and can read 100 when my GPS speedo says 108. Takes time to read same. Was not like this before conversion.
