ok.... how many kms has your Liberty done?

Is there grinding noises specially when you de-accelerate, I know this would be a pain in the arse, do a oil change and see if you can find metal bits & sh¡ts, it would be an good indication that you have damaged bearings/badly worn in the gearbox. But afterall if you dont have 2nd gear - could be a blown box, I dunno how and why it wouldn't have it, were you being rough with the gearbox?

2 options below -
Take it to a mechanic to get the box removed (lucky its FWD - job is lot easier than AWD) and open the box up for further inspection, you're looking up to over a grand for that.
Find an FWD box from a wreck and swap it over either yourself or mechanics.

Oh a FWD box - based on Melbourne Wreckers is from $67 upwards. (AWD box is about the same if you're sneaky & smart enough)

Hi. A google search for Subaru FWD 5 Speed box returned this page as one of the results.

I'm wondering if maybe anyone here may provide me with a little info that I'm finding difficult to come by...

I'm looking for some details on this gearbox, FWD 5Speed.
Would anyone be kind enough to do some measurments on the box for me?
Need to know:
Overall Length (from engine/gearbox mating surface to rear of box)
Width and height of main body of box
Width and height of bellhousing of box.

Also, does the gearstick operate with cables? Or does it go straight into the box, like a normal front engine rear drive vehicle?

If cables, is it the usual type 2 cable setup, one to cross planes, the other to select the gear?

A few pics would be very much appreciated, if it's not a lot of trouble!

Looking to utilise this box, to mate to a non subaru motor, and be utilised in a custom project in a mid engine car.
Hence my research, chasing dimensions, etc.

Thank you very much in advance!
Clint.

I dont have the measurements of FWD box as I dont have one here, but the gear selector is on the gearbox heres the pic
Image
Next to the tailshaft output on the left, that is a gear selector shaft. (the one on the right is 4WD selector off from EA82 box) (that picture is off from 4WD box but its the same as FWD box without tailshaft)
It goes behind North-South engine same setup as RWD.

OK, so that one selector at the lower right of the pic, it rotates to change the plane (1-2/3-4/5-R) and pushes in/out for the actual gear..?
Top rear right of box is transfer case engagement/4wd? Won't be on FWD box..
What is the rod thing i see top left of pic?

Also, is the FWD box a little shorter than awd? couple of inches? Due to no rear output shaft?

Anyone able to measure up/supply the dimensions?

Thanks.

Here is edited picture - to give you clearer picture of the selectors.
Where the gear selector rod is - is same measurements location on FWD box & 4WD/AWD. (currently I don't have any gearboxes here to measure)
The transfer section wont be on FWD box and at the end of the gearbox is half shorter on FWD box. If you still dont have measurements by end of next week - let me know I know someone else has FWD box sitting there that I can measure for you..

Thank you. Your info has been quite helpful.
I don't have any sources or contacts to do with Subaru, so will happily sit tight, and await such time as you are able to measure, and provide the info, without going out of your way..

Oh, a little insight..
I've not mentioned this to anyone on my forums.. but
I want to mate a Mitsubishi 6A12 MIVEC (2L V6 from FTO) to the subi FWD 5 speed, and mount the whole package into the back of my Elise, longitudinally.
Hence, the importance of measuring everything.
I have 1 metre to accomodate engine and box, before it punches a hole out the rear clamshell!
I'll do custom inlet and exh, run it all on a haltech.. and should be happily making about 250hp at the crank.
Over twice the standard power.
So, here's hoping the measurements are all ok, and it'll fit.
Otherwise, I'll just have to stick the V6 and it's factory box in transversely, as it comes ex FTO.

Whilst on the subject, do these FWD boxes come LSD equipped?
If not, LSD available to suit??

Thanks.
Clint.

Fair enough
Nice ride there and it would be interesting using Subaru box.

LSD - no there isn't any FWD that comes with LSD.
But other option is - to get one from WRX front LSD (hard to find) and it will fit in this gearbox. (you will have to open up the gearbox)
If you're lucky which I do believe in, you could change the final drive ratio & 5th ratio as well by swapping parts over. You could try get input shaft to suit whatever ratios you want ie. 4.11 or 4.44/3.9/3.7 etc...
Lowest 5th gear ratio I've seen is 0.738:1 (Subaru had 0.738:1, 0.780, 0.825 etc)that 2 litre V6 will be able to cope with, but 1st to 4th is solid - cannot be changed.

Cool, thanks for the info and advice so far.
I'll sit tight, and await your measurements, but don't go out of your way on my account!
I have to arrange to get the measurements of the engine now...

Not too worried about the ratios, I'm sure standard will suit..
Good to know the LSD can be sourced.. a front WRX/Legacy one...?

Hoping the motor and box measurements show i can fit it!

Otherwise, will have to use motor and standard box ex FTO, transverse mount, as per FTO.

Not too much of an issue, but i do like the longitudinal mount idea better!

Thanks.
Clint.
