87 Leone RX Turbo Water Pump
87 Leone RX Turbo Water Pump
Hello,
I currently own a Leone RX turbo which has a cast iron water pump that is leaking. Does anyone know where I could find a NEW water pump that has a cast iron impeller?
We can't seem to find a cast iron one anywhere!! The only ones we can find new are steel.
Thanks,
Marcus

All aftermarket pumps will have the folded steel impeller blades, only genuine Subaru pumps will have the cast impeller (copy right and cost of manufacturing issues)smsubarus wrote:Hello,

87 Leone RX Turbo Water Pump
Thanks for your reply.
We were also thinking of putting a twin core radiator in the car any suggestions as to the best way to go about this. Probably been asked 100 times before but if you can help would be greatly appreciated. Is there an easy install option for this?

Yeah just get a waterpump from Subaru.
Dual core radiator here's what to do;
- Take an original L series radiator into a good radiator shop
- Ask them to fit a dual core radiator core into the same frame. They will need to use brass end tanks from either a Tarago or Gemini (or something else if they rekon it's easier or fits better).
This results in a bulletproof radiator that will cool any engine well and minimal installation fuss. They never fit 100% perfect but you can make it work. Got to find a decent shop that doesn't mind abit of custom work.
Last one I got done cost me $550.
ElFreddo had a mob make him up a triple core one but he's the only one I've heard of

I have a funny feling the EA82 water pumps were built to be repairable. If you can still get repair bits and gifted enough to measure it all up and press it to bits and back again....
When ordering one aftermarket, there are two types, the difference being in the deck height of only 5mm, 105 and 110 from memory. If you have the turbo the parts interpreters list tend to steer them towards selling you the wrong one.
I have found that if you have the turbo AND it is the flat ribbed fan belt you go for the bigger deck height. I run an EA82T with std V belts, ordered the turbo one only to have to press it down to the standard carby , mpfi listing deck height...and paid ten bucks more for the turbo pump. It has pressed metal impeller.

The yanks could get dual core radiators for their L series. When i had to get a new radiator for my Turbo L Series, i looked online for one, but couldnt find one.
I wonder if we could get some sent over, (assuming they still make them)

Yeah I got my radiator made to a three core as AP said. Aussie Desert Coolers in Perhan (?) were responsible for it - $550 and a little bit of tapping near the driver's headlight and it just slid in as it should've. My thermo fan setup had to be worked out after that but I found that the MY's AC thermo fan worked well in there with the EA82. With the EJ22 I've managed to fit only one fan so far...
ADC only did single and triple core radiators. If you have or find a decent radiator shop they should be able to knock just about anything up for you if you've got the good stuff to do it
As for the water pump - does the case iron impellor really matter? I'm pretty sure the replacement one I got (non genuine) had a case iron impellor - I didn't know you could get a pressed metal one...
Cheers

The only reason we have been chasing the cast iron impellor is that we have an imported motor and the advice given to us was only ever use water pumps with the cast iron - not sure why - just following that bit of advice. As for the water pump - does the case iron impellor really matter? I'm pretty sure the replacement one I got (non genuine) had a case iron impellor - I didn't know you could get a pressed metal one...
If the aftermarket ones are as good we could give that a go. We have a couple of cast iron ones that leak that could be reconditioned. We have been thinking about reconditioning them ourselves as we do have access to the press etc.
We will give Subaru a go and see if we can get a new one. Don't want to go over the top in price though. We will also ask Subaru for a reconditioning kit.
Thanks again for the advice.

Virtually every Factory WSM I have ever seen shows how to rebuild water pumps .
The problem seems to be that you have to A) be able to get a rebuild kit and B) hope its economic to rebuild it - if you were paying someone to do that .
In the past most shops just replaced them because it wasn't usually much dearer and the customer had their car back sooner .
We went through this with my EA82T rebuild and recently when the Skyline had its major service .
Really all EA82T's came fron Japan and I don't know of any major differences in the water pumps - besides the height of the pulleys mounting collar .
The one my engine builder supplied was an aftermarket one , the brand escapes me but they have used many of them in different engines and had no probs .
He did ask me about this turbo/non turbo business and I mentioned that the Vortex ones used a polly V belt drive and the collar was set at a different height on the nose of the shaft to suit the deeper pulley boss .
My engine was from an AWD Turbo Vortex but I wanted to use the L Series single V belt for simplicities sake so the collar had to suit the more common L Series V belt pulley . The Vortex pulley is a machined casting with a reasonably deep center boss because you can have at times a fair bit of force on those polly V belt drives . The L pulley is a pressed steel one and thin where it bolts to the pumps collar , hence the L collar sitting higher on the pumps nose .
Impellar wise the new one has larger diameter pressed steel blades and less blades than the original one - it may have had a cast one . My engine builder , old school and soon to retire , said he prefered the new one and I must say I don't seem to have any pumping problems .
Hope this helps cheers A .

A lot of the JDM turbo auto front cuts we used to see had them as standard. A few of the manuals had them but not many. So Subaru obviously had them. Trying to get a factory part number these days would be a nightmare.
AndrewT is right about the Tarago end tanks. When we first started fabbing custom radiators for them that is what we used. There is also an Impreza twin core that is the correct size for use between the tarago tanks. Can't for the life of me remember what model it is now.

Here is a company that sells a Subaru 2 core radiator http://www.usaradiator.com/SUBARU--LOYALE--1990.html
Part no. 1269 RADIATOR => 25 3/8 CORE; OUTLET TURNS TOWARD FENDER; 2 ROW $182

I wonder how one would go getting it shipped over?

I have delt with this company in Seattle for a few years. It has been since '96 and I no longer have any industrial connections. usa radiator promotes their product, or has bought in to the company. I have spoken with performance regarding radiators for my 90 loyale wagon and they could not help without a sample. Now that we have their part number I would recommend comparing prices with usa rad.

As far as freight or postage from the US - Mark can you expand on Pitney Bowes whose name appeared on the red rubber stamp of my parcel that took four days and US$16 to get to Oz, and UPS with tracking same size wieght took a week and US$88. There is US Postal Service, there is UPS and what is Pitney Bowes, another mailing company in competition with USPS? In Australia we have Australia Post as the post office and lots of other freight parcel companiesbut not two different brands of post offices

Unless things have changed Pitney Bowes is the trade name of a refillable postage meter, allowing businesses and high usage us mail customers to weigh and attach postage themselves without having to go to the post office, wait in line and have a postmaster weigh, charge and attach postage( a timely process in large metro areas) I had one of these meters at my disposal when doing the parts thing. I will call Performance today, get a cost and shipping weight on the 2 core rad ( see if they can clue me into a closer source or distributor for you guys) and I'll post results this evening.steptoe wrote:As far as freight or postage from the US - Mark can you expand on Pitney Bowes whose name appeared on the red rubber stamp of my parcel that took four days and US$16 to get to Oz, and UPS with tracking same size wieght took a week and US$88.
