Whats the difference between R160 & R180 diff?
Most of what you say is true disco, but thats been objective and disregarding the passion most of us have for our Subarus. The point isn't the destination but the joy of the journey and a large part of that is the challenge of doing it in a subaru. Reminds me of the rednecks in the 6" lifted Patrol down at Aire Beach who had a good laugh at our expense trying to get up the sand dune. Any tool with a VB can in his hand can do it in a 6" lifted patrol and 30" tyres, but we were there for the joy and challenge of doing it in our Subarus!
Track building is all part of the off-road experience but the less you have to get out of your car to do it, the better.
On topic, while searching for torsion diffs i found one for an R180. http://members.optushome.com.au/amaxeng/five10/diff.htm

I doubt anyone has in a Subaru yet. I've thought of it when I was thinking of ways to put an R200 into my wagon (to get air locking capabilities). Being very much like a tailshaft makes them easier to take to a place to have them lengthened or shortened, they can simply cut the tube section down or replace it with longer tube. However the stumbling block seems to be how to easily get the corresponding flanges on the hub side. Unless perhaps converting to some kind of Datsun rear hub or similar.

i reckon we need to adapt a abs/traction control setup with open diffs so that if a wheel slips the brake operates and transfers drive to other wheel.
i think landrovers have it and its called climb-assist
bosch abs are (afaik) fairly self contained, i just cant find info on how to upgrade or find how toos.
we need 4 channel traction control that works at low speed
