Liberty intermittent power loss
Liberty intermittent power loss
I have a '97 Liberty in excellent mechanical condition and only 135000kms on the clock but it is cutting out intermittently and no-one can fix it. NRMA has tried new alternator, fuel filter, etc., but the problem recurs. No errors logged on the computer that they can find.
It dies but restarts immediately... seems to be an electrical failure.
Does anyone have any similar experience?
Thanks
Lorelle

Have you checked all electrical such as tension leads, spark plugs?
Is it automatic or manual?
Is there enough fuel pressure?
Are there any air leaks?
Is the timing in correct position?
Cheers

Many thanks for the reply, AP. It's automatic and the NRMA checked all the leads and plugs but I'll go and ask them about the other stuff and report back. I hope you've hit on something but the NRMA mechanics are very good but they couldn't find the fault in a couple of days, despite fitting and then removing various parts.

Hmm...... I dont know what I would do...
I was thinking about torque converter... but it cant be...
Can you idle at normal speed or just dies or it does idle but in gear then it dies??
Cheers

You dont have an alarm/immobiliser do you?
I read a similar story on another forum where the engine would shut down randomly and then restart instantly.
It turned out to be a dodgy alarm/immobiliser installation where the wires were just twisted and taped together, and the wire that cut the ignition had come loose.
I would also agree on the above posts suggestion of the faulty ignition barrel

Thanks for the replies, boys. It does cut out sometimes when idling and I don't have an alarm or immobiliser.
The ignition barrel makes a lot of sense. I'll go back to the NRMA and see if they checked it. I'm fairly sure the ignition/fuel pump relay was one of the things they tried, but I'll double check that, too.
Thanks again.

I have a 1991 GX which has done nearly 350,000k and I am having the same problem - occasionally the power goes and the car starts wobbling at high speed or up long hills, once you leave it off for 5 minutes or so it's fine. Also has a horrible rattling/whistling while accelerating all the time. I've been told fuel pump (which I am having fixed tomorrow) anyone have any other ideas?
Problem solved
As I said I had the fuel pump replaced, the guys from Ultra Tune kept it overnight to make sure it worked, and I hadn't had any problems.
The big test came this weekend when I drove it from Melbourne to Adelaide and back while most of western VIC and all of SA was yhaving a heatwave - and it was as good as gold, not a hiccup there or back, the cuise worked a treat and it had no problems with the Adelaide Hills which would have caused a power splutter before the fuel pump was replaced.

To all those who answered...
I forget to respond here... very sorry. The NRMA found a loose wire i8n the airflow meter but after hoping it had worked, two days later the problem was still there. They finally fitted a second-hand airflow meter which has fixed the problem.
Thanks again to everyone for their help.
