gen2 manual to auto conversion

considering changing the outback to auto. not real worried about the mechanical changes such as box, tailshaft, rear diff, console and pedal box. but would appreciate any info for wiring and such, are all the plugs there, is it plug and play or a bit more serious?

It involves a complete harness change. Put it this way, to fit an auto you need to remove your dash and all the wires behind it and swap it for a harness to suit your gearbox.

Its actually gonna be easier and cheaper to buy an auto outback

There are lots of sensors to integrate to make the auto work.

yep the ecu needs to be changed (auto one is different to manual) there is a harness that goes to the auto box thats different there is an ecu for the box you need the auto dash and associated loom (just looking at the wreckers before) (sadly no MY ventilated discs and rotors :( )

its a complicated task mate... it would be either ideal to have donor car to have before you start the project. I personally think its lot easier if you change whole car to automatic outback.

Yeah I understand, its good to spill the beans here for opinions. Ive done it before from manual to automatic and man it was a hell of a job (took me a month to finish everything off backwards & forwards to wreckers for bit by bit..) and it wasn't "right" at the end and never will. Havent got that car anymore anyway.

so i should get a gt auto halfcut and put the lot in. are the loom plugs the same? ie. the door plugs and rear loom plugs

If its same year outback then it'll be easy.
In my experience between Series 1 & 2 Gen 2 Liberty (late 1994 Gen 2 & late 1996 Gen 2) I've noticed different colour codes of wiring. So thats a downside.

Yeah even my Gen 1 GX's had different wiring harness but I had similar issues but to you but wanted to go auto gen 2 to man!
87 targa brumby (Neglected),
92 targa brumby (weekend runabout),
97 Lifted Outback (Dailey drive),
05 outback safety (Too cheap to pass up),
90 model liberty (was to be scrapped instead sold to workmate)
+ others.
