light knocking noise Brumby front RHS

Post by scoobymine » Sun Nov 01, 2009 7:21 pm

Hi,

I've just replaced front CV's, and shocks on my 83 Brumby. After all that I still have a light knocking noise, mainly on take off that seems to stop when I reach about 60 ks. I also had what I thought was a bad wheel bearing on the same side. Changed that on the weekend and definately no more bearing noise, but still this bloody knocking from the same side.
Tested out the CV's by turning tight circles left and right, Did get a slight knocking from RHS.
Bought the CV's on E-Bay. Could I possibly have been sold a bodgie CV or does anyboby else have an opinion?
Thanks

Just check the tightness of the inner CV where it slides onto the stub axle coming out of the gearbox. I know it has a roll pin through it but just see how much slop is on the spline.

I bought complete axles off ebay and there seems to be a fair bit of lateral movement there. There is a bit of noise and then it goes as you speed up. I don't know what can be done about it. I'm not sure if it is the axle or the stub on the gear box side is worn a bit.

Other things to check are radius rod tension, and locating pins on the disc caliper. All suspects in the past in my case.

Thanks for the tips, i'll check those points. Didn't realise those caliper pins suffer wear. I suppose you can only get 2nd hand parts when it comes to the brakes?
Where's the radius rod located?

Could it be wheel balancing??

The radius rods (One on each side) bolt onto the lower control arm and extend back onto the under body of the vehicle. They are a round rod, and bolt onto the body through a couple of large rubber grommets. At the end, is a nut 14ml I think, just make sure that it is tight. You can get replacement rubbers for the rods, if required. I would tend to bet that it is the slop in the axle, where the axle, slides onto the stub axle of the gearbox. That should be a snug fit.

Brumby brakes, well just grab the caliper by hand and see if there is any movement in it whilst the handbrake is off. They will be a rattle/knocking noise as you drive along a rough back street. Remedy, check the anchor pin, that anchors the caliper to the anchor bracket. There should be anti rattle shims sitting in the caliper with the pads also. It just applies slight pressure on the pads in the housing to stop them rattling.

Also make sure that the castle nut in the centre of the wheel, is very tight. (Previously discussed on this forum) .It needs to be super tight and the cone washer behind it needs to be in good order. New ones are available at Subaru parts reasonably priced. If the trouble is there in the wheel with the castle nut and washer it will be more of a crunching noise.

There is some play in the CVs at the gearbox end. Possibly what Pezimm said, maybe it could be wheel balance. I'm going to have a wheel alignment done, as every thing will be out of whack with the new ball joints etc.
If it is play in the CVs, probably can't do anything (there's about 10mm movement back and forth gearbox to wheel).
Thanks for your interest guys
