yay for oil leaks

Post by twilightprotege » Wed Oct 28, 2009 1:41 pm

my ea82t is leaking oil more than normal now, and i think it's coming from around the oil pan. the engine has been leaking a small amount of oil for a while, but over the last week it's leaking a lot more. enough so that parked for 10 minutes while i fill the car with fuel and pay there's a pool of oil about the size of a can of drink top.

is this a common area for oil to be leaking from? any other areas i should be resealing while i've got the engine out to stop the oil (and my money) just dripping out of the car?

I'd say its the oil pump that's leaking - it may look like its the sump gasket but from my experience it was the oil pump's seal that needed to be done. To me the air movement under the motor around the sump at speed allows the oil to be sprayed around that area, making it look like the sump gasket is dead or you've got a rear main seal that's carked it.

If it were me I'd just do the oil pump gasket and seal, but if you want to do the sump gasket at the same time for piece of mind its up to you ;)

yeah there's definately nothing around the oil pump that's leaking. it's either the sump or the rear main seal. the oil is all at the back of the sump and that area, nothing at the front.

how much does a rear main seal go for?

Get it power washed first and watch where its seeping from to confirm if its the pump or not.... its like with mine, i thought I had leaky cam seals but it was the rocker cover gaskets about 3 years ago.

yeah i'm just going to take the engine out and replace the rear main seal and redo the seal around the sump and clean everything up properly. i know the steering rack leaks as well, so i'm sorting that at the same time - hopefully no more leaks from here!

the culprits look to be the rear main seal and the steering rack. not 100% sure, but i think the sump is ok. gotta clean the thing up first (just got the engine out of the car)
