EA82T Brumby update

Post by subybrumby » Thu Oct 22, 2009 6:01 pm

Hi everyone.

I've been all over the forum the last couple of months with different issues on my turbo brumby. Rather than dive all around the different posts I thought I would bring people up to speed in this one post and again thanks to all those who gave advice. I actually think I am starting to get on top of the issues and it is driving really well at the moment.

1. EA82T ticking lifter. I went with Phil from Darwin on this. I read all the arguments especially Discopotato's post but bought CAT oil. The engine shutup from the moment the oil went in. Its as quiet as a mouse. Fingers crossed.

2. Harsh squeak under the dash. It was the guard that I had made to shield the turbo. It had slipped and was rubbing on the steering column behind the engine. I removed it and gave a slight trim, all is well. I discovered this after I had pulled most of the dash out.

3. Flat spot in the motor just above idle as you accelerate off. I was fiddling around the engine and saw a small vacuum line adrift. I reattached the line and put a zip tie on, and seem to have fairly well fixed the flat spot. It is a pleasure to drive now.

4. Brakes and front end. I have reverted to the vented brakes that all brumbys have and the front end is really quiet. I originally had put solid discs on after removing the L series setup and they rattled like mad. Now very happy with the quiet front end.

That's about it for the moment. I bought a full new set of wheel nuts for it and I think I might go for a drive this weekend.

Thanks everyone.

My baby

Where I work Diesel engine oil is delivered in 20 44's batches and I still wouldn't use it .

When your engine is fresh with new seals and doesn't leak a drop you can use good synthetics that are better protection in virtually any survivable temperature range . Mobil 1 4T 15W50 at $16.20 L in my EA82T . My engine was run in for 1500 k's and has had the synthetic in it for about 3500 km without even changing colour . If it started to tap I'd be resetting the belt tensioners and then it won't .

Works for me , cheers A .

I've had the problem for awhile with the lifters and went with Penrite?? a while back on good advice. Also installed a genuine subaru oil filter after putting an engine flush through it. It shut up for a while, but I went to a car show a few weeks back and as I drove in, it started click click click again, really bad. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me as every one was looking. So I was ready to try anything. I was starting to think about getting a rebuild motor on the bench and begin working toward another power plant option.

So, I'll see how it goes. Its not a new idea of course. I've heard of people running diesel oils in vehicles before. I knew a fellow in Bundaberg years ago who ran his komatsu dozer, 4x4 toyota trayback and family car all on the same oil. And a brand new sigma that I bought many years ago, was recommended to run on diesel engine oil when all us proud new car owners (1980) started taking them back to the dealer because we couldn't keep oil up to them. Unfortunately for the sigmas, it was too late for them.

I had a bit of a yarn to the guy at Hastings Deering about the oil before I bought it, but by then, I thought, what have I got to lose, I've tried everything else.

Anyway, its really quiet, best its been actually....we'll see what happens.

Good to hear all this. So , can you identify the vacuum lne you zip tied?
Your rear brakes - still drums?

Happy with the braking?

Engineered?

Ok for STeptoe

Brakes are standard brumby vented discs in front. Pulls up alright. I drive aggressively but not necessarily fast, so they'll do. The car is compliance plated for the engine swap so I guess it should technically have the brakes for that engine which would be L series discs. (It did have them on when I bought it but didn't work out. Too much positive camber. See previous posts)

Rear are disc also taking leone pads.

This is the vacuum line I found off
