MY Power Steering leak Brumby.

Post by subybrumby » Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:05 pm

Hi Guys/Gals

Is it possible to replace the oil seal that sits on the top entry point of the steering into the power steering rack whilst it is still on the vehicle/ a brumby.

Thanks

If you mean where the steering shaft enters the powersteering rack, then yes - you'll need a hex key to do it. Disconnect the steering shaft, PS hoses/lines and undo the hex bolts, then lift the unit off to replace the seal.

Cheers

there is a product at super cheap, brand is ? Lucas? about $18 for 500ml , white with blue /red print, funnel ponty top for power steering seal reconditioning. It has worked more times than it hasn't for many of our power steering leaks. takes a while but good result.

It works? Bit surprising. I was always put off by the absurd "renews worn components" claim.

Congratulations on reaching the big 3000, Steptoe.

Some of the boys in WA used to run engine oil in their power steering systems. Apparently the story was that there were no ill effects and basically it was alot cheaper than using PS fluid. I havn't tried it myself.

 That's a pissa! I guess that it is a form of hydrolic system after all...

I'm still laughing!

Thanks for your replies. I havn't got to it yet. The car has been really good for no oil leaks but now this has suddenly appeared. My best look at it so far appears to show it coming from that seal that would be on top where the steering shaft enters the box/rack. Not worth an exchange rack if I can just replace that seal myself. The rack works perfectly otherwise. (Power Steering)

Yeah Dane, call it workshop tested. I have used it a coupla times and found positive results. Mate now uses it in his workshop to avoid repair/ replace jobs and good reports from customers in nearly all cases, one or two only where seals too far gone for the rejuvenate to work its wonders on the softening the seals. arf, arf

Ok. gonna do this. It is definitely leaking from that area where the steering column enters the rack. Can't find any exploded views of this area. If I undo the top where those hex screw are, whats underneath. Is a pile of workings gonna fall out. And is it a seal or O ring.

One way to find out I guess.

God I love lying underneath this car...NOT!!!!

Ok...The rack is halfway out and going to Sydney to get overhauled.

The rack is held in by two saddle mounts and the whole thing is a bit dodgy with different size bolts used etc by previous owner.. Question: The bolts run through the "U" saddle and then into the engine cross member but the nuts are in a small recess with a slot. What the??? How do you hold onto those nuts to release the bolt..or has this been bodgied up...are they supposed to be captive nuts or a threaded recess??? Is the slot to hold with a spanner or something??

Can someone tell me thanks????? (Its a brumby with power steering rack).

Ok the racks out and on its way to Sydney for full rekit. The two bolts on the drivers side look to be original, 14ml and screw into the subframe. The two on the passenger side are bodgied with a bolt hanging through one hole with a piece of wire stuck to the head so that they could manouvre it into position and the other has a nut sitting up on the inside of the hole to take a bolt straight through. The thread in the subframe has been damaged. So..It'll have to go back that way.

The rack wouldn't come straight out until one of the hose connections was removed from the front. Couldn't get to it until the axle was removed from the gearbox, and the control arm released to pull the offset joint off the gearbox. Heatshields had to be removed from the turbo up pipe to get access and the sumpguard etc removed. Not really a straight forward job. Oh!! and the power steering oil that ran all over me was great. I really enjoyed that..Blahhh. Spoke to the guy in Sydney doing the rebuild and he recommends dextron 3.
