Best oil to reduce 'ticking' in EA82?
Best oil to reduce 'ticking' in EA82?
I believe i have a leaky injector that is leaking fuel which is finding its way into the oil and diluting it. It's due for an oil change anyway but recently i havent been driving it very much and it has developed a tick which I think is mainly due to not being driven and the diluted oil. I'm wondering what the best oil would be to use?

I had the dreaded lifter tick for a while.
So I tried using thinner oil.
I went for 10w30 and from the moment I put it in my lifters went crazy...constantly.
So I drained it and went back to 20w50 and never heard them again (touch wood its been 2 months now)

I think Phill needs to think again , carbon crud doesn't seal compression and combustion pressure in . Thats what properly sealing piston rings and valve faces and seats do .
High detergent oil isn't always diesel spec oil either , years ago in the Cooper S engines I ran BP Corse Plus and that was a fairly high detergent four stroke petrol engine oil . High detergent because high performance carburetted engines with big cams get rich and dirty in the top ends and some gets past the rings and into the oil .
Diesel engine oil isn't really higher spec than many good petrol engine oils , it has different additives because they run significantly higher compression ratios and also lower combustion temperatures - also diesel fuel has a higher flash point than ULP so not quite as volatile .
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this before but if you read the labels on containers of diesel engine oil it specifically mentions that it's not recommended for cars with cat converters so it could possibly poison the catalyst rendering it useless , maybe the 02 probe as well .
A better method of cleaning an engine internally is to do two or three short oil service periods and if it continues to get crud in the oil fix whatever the problem is . As mentioned previously the genuine workshop manuals say 15W30/40/50 depending on the ambient temperature ranges the car is run in .
I'm still not convinced that sticky rocker pivots (they are NOT "lifters") is the problem . My original 300+ K EA82 only had valve train noises while there was slack in the cam belts , this was remedied once with new belts and tensioners and again after a few thousand Km by resetting the belt tensioners .
The rebuilt Vortex turbo engine had two of its pivots gutted and found to be fine , the rest were washed oiled and refitted . The oil pump was mint so it went back in with new seals etc .
About the only ticking this engine makes is its injectors opening and closing though it will get its head bolts retorqued and belt tensioners reset in the near future .
Your calls .
