Oliver the Brumby Ute

Post by Dico » Thu Oct 15, 2009 2:35 pm

So I purchased my first ever Subaru, a 1988 4x4 Brumby Ute...

The whole reason for purchasing the ute was that Dad wanted a little work ute and I wanted a daily driver instead of my SS for a while and so the search began for a small ute. We found "Oliver" (As my girlfriend seems to have named him) in the local trading post for $2800, being the only Brumby for sale in WA I decided to go see the seller and see what I was dealing with.

Heres some pictures of how Oliver was when we found him:

As you can see from the above pictures, Oliver was in quite a state when we got him, so we soon set to work about making him look a bit better. 7 cans of super cheap matt black spray paint, a few rolls of masking tape, a newspaper and half a days worth of work and Oliver now looks like this:

Now remember that this car is just a daily run around, so please dont go grilling me on my methods of painting a car etc... It was just for a bit of entertainment and I dont think that it turned out too bad for less than $20 worth of paint and a bit of elbow grease!

The canopy and bullbar are both for sale, I will list them later in the trade section if anyone is interested.

Oh what I would have given to get 'Oliver' before you sprayed him!

Yeah me too - I was looking at that ad and hoping it was still there when I come down to Perth this weekend. You b*st*rd :-) and how could you ruin an unmolested car in such good conrition like that ? Or is it not as good as it looked in the photos ?

I just paid $4k for a brumby that looks like that condition minus the decals with 170,000kms on the clock and i thought that was a bargain!

Brumby's are one of the few cars that appear to be cheaper in the west than in the east

Good job on the painting there. Glad it's back to it's original white and decals now. It looked bloody aweful with that terrible black paint and stupid stripes before, I can't beleive tasteless people do that to cars!

(I think you got the before/after pictures around the wrong way though).

In hindsight yes abit harsh heh. Obviously you weren't going for a show-room quality finish. I think most of us just rekon that it looked better before that's all :)

Hmmm, well wasnt really expecting to be hit with so much hostility towards this.

Maybe I should remove this thread before one of you guys comes and bricks my house because I decided to paint a car black.

I think it is because it looked good to start with and now it has a $20 spray can paint job. If it had been badly faded, different colours or bright pink and you did the same you would have gotten thumbs up.

Lose the white stripes and it would look hot - plus I am just jealous 'cos I don't have a Brumby (yet).

To stick with the theme of the name, the stripes could work well as an 'Olive' colour :)

Sorry but I follow others in their feelings - brumby's have a soft spot for a lot of subaru fans! If it was like guyph's $400 brumby I'd say go for it, but that subi was a neat clean looking brumby that looks like its just been turned to the dark side!! I thought it was going to get a lift and tyres but alas.

Either way its your subi, you've made it yours and I hope to see it stick out some more on the forum as you take it out for some fun on the tracks - these little things go just about anywhere!

Enjoy - that's what you got it for right!!

Cheers

hehe my brother wanted to paint his mat black too, i persuaded him to keep it red and try to make it look good with the original colour.

Like bennie said its your brumby and you should and can do what ever you want with it. and yeah paint was perfect for what it was and now perfect to your taste:D

Hope you mod it and enjoy its 4WD possibilities and keep posting about it.

P.s would i be able to get that roof rack off ya??

Lol, you "decided" to paint it black? I was hoping it was just a moment of temporary insanity! :)

Nah no actual hostility intended, don't take it like that, this is just a public internet forum, people are gonna say what they think.

Now go buy a bunch of neons and really class it up :)

Guys,

To be honest, the pictures of "Oliver" when he was white, were taken when the previous owner bought him...

So the "Oliver" when I bought him was and still is full of rust, with those stickers half peeled off the car, and also has some serious tailgate damage from a four wheel driving accident.

Oliver also has oil in his water, blows smoke, wont drive unless the choke is on and is also locked in 4x4 and cant be shifted back into FWD.

Any ideas on getting it back to FWD?

I don't feel too bad about the povo-pac paint job because, all of the people who saw Oliver before I painted him, really think he looks a lot better now than he did when he was caked in rust.

Also Oliver is bent... Not in the homosexual context, but literally bent, he dosent sit right on the road, one of the seats sits lower than the other and one door wont close properly, I suspect this was another 4x4 incident as Oliver used to do a lot of dune bashing at Lancelin.

On the road Oliver pulls heavily to the right and also shudders uncontrollably after 80 kmph, any ideas on what would be causing this? Its not a wheel alignment or balance because I have had both of these done already.

Look if anyone wants the roof rack, its a bit broken from the previous owner, but its here and its free if you want it...

yeah i want the roof rack, I'll organize a bit later to get it. Ok if it was that bad definitely it must look better now. The only thing i would not have paid that much money for it.

But relax we are just expressing our personal views:)
