Decode this Forester VIN please ?

Post by steptoe » Wed Aug 12, 2009 10:54 pm

I spotted a Forester for sale tonight, mostly in darkness but I was able to grab its VIN as JF2S F5KJ 4YGO xxxxx, anyone able to decode from a factory manual as to its age and whether it is dual range? No price just a phone number. And I am just thinking.....so nothing of mine is for sale...thinking it is time to grow up and just own a car that I can drive not tinker with.

dunno, that's why asking :)

I think the 4YG0 should be 41G0 as errors do occur and depending on how bad the inspectors numerals and digits are interpreted by counter staff knowing sweet eff eh. Done some research and found if 1 replaces the Y it is a typical 2001 Foz, so dunno if D/R yet of that year model, was hoping a factory manual would decode for the rest

More likely it would have 1.447 low ratio.. Could be wrong tho.

Google turned up a couple of different meanings, but both point towards it being a 2000 model 2.0L 5 speed. All the non-turbo manuals were dual range.

J Japan
F FHI
2 4wd passenger
S Foz
F 5 door wagon
5 2.0L
K RHD?
J weight class?
4 check digit or DR manual
Y 2000
G DR manual

still there after six weeks with four weeks rego left and 2 9 6 , 0 0 0 km on it. If they not answer my text message maybe same for others. Looks tidy enough and is Foz Green. It'd wanna be cheap. A better look and a test drive can't hurt , surely????

haha i brought a green forester couple weeks ago with the same thoughts. 97 ej20 dual range 140k on the clock. nice daily but im already thinking, springs are a little worn..... oh well maybe a small lifted spring will do. oh and tyres are due for replace, maybe some more agressive tyres.

you can never stop, normal is just to normal and boring

I believe all NA manual foresters were dual range. Only turbo manuals and autos were single range.

I don't think it wouldn't have the good low range. Pretty sure the only EJ's with this were some early Impreza's (this was a closely guarded secret apparently).
But yeah, it would be low range, only the turbo ones lacked this.
But if this is a car for driving not tinkering, are u really gonna need low-low range for offroading?
