Liberty brake booster/cylinder in L series
Liberty brake booster/cylinder in L series
Hi guys,
I want to install this liberty Brake booster/master cylinder unit on my L series. I would like to know if its a straight swap?
Would i need to block/ bend the oil lines?
How do i know what lines go where? to they all line up?
Would it be best to use the L booster and the Lib cylinder?
Or use the complete Lib unit?
What else can i expect to do when doing the swap?
My plan is to buy and install the crossbreed kit in the close futur. At the moment im replacing to a better/higher compression engine so i thought i'd change the booster also.
Awaiting your ideas, advice
thx

I personally would use a liberty booster and an impreza master . In the cross bred kit , as far as i know , comes 2 plugs that are used to block the unused out lets on the master. The impreza master has 4 out lets , you only have to use 2 , and i believe the 2 you use , line up with the 2 standard lines. Dont quote me on that . I may be thinking of the M.Y. As they are the ones i work with all the time.

Cool thx, Any reason why you would use the Impreza Master?
Any more info on fitting the booster and the master lines??
So it would be better for me to wait and install all the kit at once?

Bummer, I just threw away 1 Liberty & 2 WRX brake boosters, you could have had one to try it out.

Yeah both bits are a straight bolt-in swap. The lines just plug straight in (although they aren't "oil" lines, they are brake fluid lines).
Some Lib brake master cylinders have an extra outlet, no problem you can just get a screw-in bung from any brake place for like a buck.

That'd be my idea - less work in long run.guyph_01 wrote:So it would be better for me to wait and install all the kit at once?
Also I've heard that the lib booster/master cylinder combo on stock L series brakes can cause some strange brake feel and sudden brake activation. Gee did this on his L and that's why he no longer has it...
Do the conversion in one hit, it'd be easier that way... You've got the disc/drum combo on your L yeah? how's that go with the EJ? I had some brake fade coming down Mt Hotham earlier this week, but there's nothing unusual about that. I've got the disc/disc setup from an RX turbo.
Cheers
Bennie
Yep sry i called them "oil" lines but you guys understood:)
Well if i drive the car carefully its ok. If i drive it hard, with hard breaking after a very short while i need to press very very hard on the brake pedal to slow down( i think thats what u called brake fade Bennie) Also if i get the car to about 110 and slam on the brakes, tyres does not lock, its just slows down and takes quite a bit of time to slow down to a stop. I rarely drive it on the road, i use a little charade as a daily, man that thing is cheap on fuel. 30lts give me 525 k's... Also since its got the 3inch and 20% tint i drive it carefully not to attract too much attention. Its hard tho not to attract attention:D hehe But i think its due to the drums and 2 different wear height front old pads. Pretty sure i could get it better with a fluid flush, new good pads, rear RX disk, But i want the lib gear and rather spend the money on that:). Ohhh did i say im putting front Rs 2 pots calipers:D hehe
Ok so seems like i'll wait to install everything at once. But i have a few more questions.
Andrew, What about the brake pedal, does that bolt on to the master without mods?
Wrxer, Does that tool bend the pipes?
Should i worry about that residual line pressure valve when i install the Master unit and 4 calipers?

I've only changed the master cylinder to a lib one myself, didn't change the booster.

U need that to bend and flare brake lines. Bend them to go the direction u want, and flare the ends, well have a look at the end of one of your lines and u will see.
None of that is required for this swap at all - it just bolts straight in. The lines don't require any changes.

I was about to start this thread again on a new page before deciding to do a search. Two years later and i'm days away to finally do this swap:D
I still have a few questions tho. I had a good look at the lines. My L has three lines, two side ones and one bottom one. The master/booster I've got has four outlets.
Would blocking the extra outlet still allow the same distribution of fluid to each lines or cause more or maybe less pressure?
Would you suggest changing both the master and booster???
The car will have front RS two pot calipers and rear Lib calipers both with slotted disks.
How has replaced both? what results did they get? I know it will be hard to compare:(
What to do???
Andrew, Did you notice a big difference after you have replaced the master on your car with a lib one?

Do you by chance have an ABS unit with the extra outlet?

Tom, Pm sent
So 2day I found the right master to suit my L series. It turns out the Liberty that has the three outlet exactly like the L series is the early gen2, Well this one has exactly identical outlet positions:D
Now, should I change the master and booster or only the master????
Plz give me your views so I can make up my mind as i have no idea...

Just block the extra outlet. Grab a brass threaded plug from any brake place, if you flutter your eyelashes they'll probably give it to you for free.
Difficult to tell if it made that much of a difference for me as I also upgraded to Liberty front and rear discs/calipers - obviously as a full kit it made a huge difference.
I doubt it'd increase your stopping power that much at all, but it might cause you to use a bit less effort on the foot to apply the same braking.
Mostly what affects braking is the disc/caliper combination, and mostly out of that it's disc diameter. Next is caliper clamping power (number of pots) and surface contact area.
Will be good when you get the full EJ discs/calipers on.
*edit - just noticed you found one with 3 outlets, even easier.
Regarding booster, what's to make up your mind about? It's an upgrade. If you have one, chuck it in, it's only held in with 4 bolts.
